Investigation reveals most living presidents descended from slave-owners, except one.
Former President Donald Trump: A Unique Ancestral Lineage
Did you know that former President Donald Trump stands apart from all other living presidents when it comes to his ancestral heritage? According to a recent genealogical study, Trump is the only living president who does not have direct lineage to slave-holders.
The study, undertaken by Reuters, revealed a fascinating insight. It determined that every living president, including Joe Biden and former presidents Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and even Barack Obama through his white mother’s side, can trace their ancestry back to slave owners.
Of course, it’s important to note that Donald Trump’s family arrived in the United States long after slavery was abolished. Trump’s grandfather, Friedrich Trump, immigrated from Germany in 1885, while his mother, Mary Anne McLeod, came from Scotland in 1929.
The report not only focused on former presidents but also delved into the ancestral connections of members of Congress. Shockingly, the study found that 100 out of the 536 members of the last Congress were descendants of slave owners. Among them were influential leaders from both parties.
Leading the list were Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR), Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), and Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.). Even sitting Supreme Court Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch were identified as having ancestral ties to slaveholders.
The report also shed light on the state of South Carolina, where the connections to slavery run deep. Not only is Republican Governor Henry McMaster descended from slave owners, but every U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator from the state has some ancestral tie to the institution of slavery. Both Republican Senator and presidential candidate Tim Scott and Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn have ancestors who were slaves. The remaining seven legislators, all of whom are white, are direct descendants of slave owners.
