Swalwell’s impeachment attempt on Trump at Hur hearing fails, leading to his frustration

During a Tuesday hearing on Capitol Hill, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) took the opportunity to lay out a case against former President Donald Trump. However, Swalwell’s frustration became apparent when Special Counsel Robert Hur refused to assist him in his efforts.
Hur was testifying about his investigation into President Joe Biden and his handling of classified documents. Instead of focusing on that topic, Swalwell treated the hearing as another Trump impeachment trial and asked Hur to condemn the former president.

Swalwell began by discussing Hur’s personal history, expressing admiration for his parents’ immigrant story. However, within seconds, Swalwell shifted his focus to attacking Trump, claiming that the former president would halt all immigration if given another chance in the White House.
He stated, “It’s the story of America. It’s a story that the guy who appointed you would end if he was put in charge again,” disregarding the distinction between legal and illegal immigration and suggesting that all Republicans supported Trump on this issue.
Swalwell then asked Hur if he wanted his report on the Biden investigation to be seen as credible. However, he immediately implied that in order for the report to have credibility, Hur would have to disavow Trump.
Swalwell listed a series of charges against Trump, including impeachment, incitement of insurrection, possession of classified documents, obstruction of justice, payment for the silence of a porn star, and involvement in the events of January 6th. He even accused Trump of being a rapist.

Swalwell then turned to Hur and asked if he would pledge not to accept an appointment from Trump if he were to be elected president again. Hur pushed back, stating that he was not there to speculate on future events.
Swalwell interrupted, insisting that it should be an easy answer considering the accusations he had just made. However, Hur remained firm, stating, “I’m not here to talk about Trump; I’m here to talk about this report, which investigated Biden.”
