Eric Adams spends final weeks in office globetrotting
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has spent his final weeks in office traveling internationally, with his fourth trip since october planned to Mexico City. Since becoming a lame-duck mayor,Adams has made trips to Albania,Israel, and Uzbekistan, often skipping returns to New York between travels. These taxpayer-funded trips have drawn attention, especially given Adams’s declining political support-he chose not to run in the Democratic primary and lost the general election. Adams has indicated these travels may help his future career prospects, possibly in the private sector or as a potential ambassador. His office defends the international trips as part of his ongoing efforts to foster economic progress and honor diverse communities. As he prepares to leave office,Adams recently participated in a time capsule ceremony marking the end of his mayoralty and reflected on his tenure, describing himself as “unfiltered” and “perfectly imperfect.”
Eric Adams spends final weeks in office globetrotting
New York Mayor Eric Adams has racked up air mileage during his final weeks in office as socialist Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani waits to take his spot.
Adams will take his fourth international trip since October to Mexico City soon.
The mayor has been a frequent traveler since taking office. His dropped corruption case centered on allegations that he received improper benefits from the Turkish government, including free business-class upgrades on Turkish Airlines.
However, in recent months, as the lame-duck mayor stares down the end of his mayoralty, he has exhibited a globetrotting streak. Beginning in October, Adams flew to Albania for a four-day trip regarding business tourism. Then he took a mid-November flight to Israel for another four-day trip.
Adams did not return to Gracie Mansion after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, instead heading to Uzbekistan for a 5-day trip. He has also reportedly discussed trips to Africa with aides before Mamdani takes office on Jan. 1.
New York City taxpayers will foot the bill for Adams’s trips, despite his status as a lame-duck mayor. Voters’ lack of support for Adams was so strong that the mayor declined to run in the Democratic primary and ran an unsuccessful general election campaign, where he ended up endorsing his opponent, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The trips could have utility for Adams’s future. He told reporters on Election Day that countries “are calling me and asking me to come and do what I did in New York City.”
He has reportedly weighed whether to take a job in the private sector, possibly internationally, after he steps down from office, and has also considered a Trump administration ambassadorship.
The mayor’s office previously defended his trips.
“The mayor has long emphasized the importance of honoring and uplifting New York City’s diverse communities, whether he is celebrating different heritages at Gracie Mansion or discussing innovation and economic development with foreign officials abroad,” Fabien Levy, a spokesman for the mayor, told the New York Times. “The mayor continues to govern, lead, and deliver for this city regardless of where he is.”
Adams will not have to wait much longer to leave his mayoral obligations in New York City, and he appears to have come to terms with that fact.
On Tuesday, he buried his mayoralty for good — literally. He and his deputy mayors chose items to include in a time capsule to be placed outside the east gate of City Hall. Adams placed a vinyl record in a sleeve decorated with the “record” of his successes in the capsule.
NEW YORK CITY COUNCIL SLAPS DOWN ERIC ADAMS’S LAST-MINUTE APPOINTMENTS
The press conference appeared to be his final one as mayor, as Adams summed up his mayoralty with just days until his successor takes office.
“Unfiltered, perfectly imperfect,” he said. “I am just Eric, and probably in the history of time as mayor, so many mayors want to be filtered. They wanted to pretend who they are and act like they are perfect. I am not.”
