Eric Adams challenges liberal city council: ‘Police must not be restrained

New York City Mayor‌ Eric Adams Vetoes Bills to Protect Police ‍Officers

New York City ‌Mayor Eric Adams made a bold move on⁢ Friday by⁢ vetoing two bills aimed at placing restrictions on police officers. In a strong statement, ⁣Adams rejected ‌the‍ ban on solitary confinement,⁤ known as Intro 549-A, in order⁤ to safeguard jail workers from violent detainees. As a former New York Police Department ‍captain, Adams⁣ emphasized the ⁣importance ‍of not hindering the police force.

“We⁤ cannot handcuff⁢ the police,” he said. “We ⁣want to handcuff bad people who are ⁣violent.”

The ⁣second⁤ bill‍ that faced the ⁤chopping block was the How Many Stops Act, which would⁣ have required officers ⁤to keep more detailed records of⁤ the individuals ‌they stopped throughout the day. Adams argued that this⁢ bill would‍ burden officers with unnecessary paperwork, ⁣ultimately compromising⁤ the safety of ‌the city.

Despite the mayor’s veto, the city council remains determined to push these bills forward. Both bills received enough votes last month to meet the ⁣two-thirds majority‌ required for passage.

Strong Opposition ⁤and Plans⁣ for Override

The council⁢ responded to‌ the mayor’s veto by ‍defending their commitment to⁣ community safety. They stated, “Anyone implying that this body‍ does not prioritize ⁢the safety of ⁣our communities is misrepresenting‌ our work and misleading New Yorkers.” Council Speaker Adrienne Adams expressed disappointment in the mayor’s decision, highlighting the negative‍ impact on ⁣Black and Latino communities who often face the brunt of police stops. She also‍ emphasized the⁣ harmful‌ effects⁣ of solitary confinement, both physically and psychologically.

Despite ‌the⁣ opposition, the city⁢ council is determined⁤ to override the mayor’s veto and ensure that these bills become law.
