‘Encanto’ Song ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ Predicted To Reach #1 On U.K. Chart

The new Disney movie “Encanto” is being celebrated for so many reasons, but one of the main sources of excitement is the soundtrack. Adults and kids alike have gotten the songs from this animated film stuck in their heads, and no song is more popular than “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”

Every parent with a “Frozen” obsessed kid knows how pervasive these songs can become, and how difficult it is to let them go. But now it looks like “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” is about to beat out mainstream music to become the top song on the charts. According to Billboard, based on 48 hours of sales and streaming activity that milestone is scheduled to happen when the new Official U.K. Singles Chart is released this Friday.

Meanwhile, as of today “Bruno” is number 5 on the Billboard Top 100 Chart in the U.S.

“Bruno” would be the first-ever top hit for all of the collaborators credited on the track, including Carolina Gaitán, Diane Guerrero, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Stephanie Beatriz, and Mauro Castillo. This change would bump Gayle’s “Abcdefu” down to second place and Adele’s former top rated “Easy On Me” to third.

Two more songs from the “Encanto” soundtrack are also ranking on the U.K. Top 20. “Surface Pressure” by Jessica Darrow could ascend to a new peak of number 6 while “The Family Madrigal” is poised to crack the Top 20 for the first time and reach number 19.

Part of the reason “Bruno” has exploded in popularity, besides the catchy arrangement, is how it’s become a TikTok phenomenon.

“I could look at the TikToks all day,” said “Encanto” director Jared Bush, according to The New York Times. “Everyone is finding a different entry point, whether it’s a specific moment or character dynamic. There’s something in it for everybody and, honestly, it’s just delicious.”

Director Byron Howard described how the song came out of award-winning composer Lin-Manuel Miranda’s brain.

“We could see Lin thinking, and he looked at us and said, ‘It feels like a spooky ghost story, like a spooky montuno,’” Howard said. “And he turns to the piano and plays the first three chords. We literally saw him put it together and compose in that very moment. I’ve never had that happen before.”

Originally, the character was named Oscar and was younger. But these details evolved as the movie progressed.

“I couldn’t figure out why he was so definitive,” Bush said, “until two days later when we heard, ‘Bruno, no, no, no.’”

According to NYT, Miranda sang all 10 parts of the original demo. The singer-songwriter behind the character Dolores recalled, “It was like Lin-Manuel on steroids.”

Time will tell if “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” reaches number one. But for now, everyone is singing along regardless.
