Dick Van Patten, who played Rich’s father on the show, expressed his admiration for the late actor, stating that Rich was a key factor in the success of “Eight Is Enough.”
“People loved him!” Van Patten said. “Fans even named their children Nicholas because of him. He was not only cute but also a talented actor with a natural presence.”
Aside from “Eight Is Enough,” Rich made appearances on popular shows like “Fantasy Island,” “Love Boat,” “The City,” and “CHiPs.” He also lent his voice to characters in the animated adaptation of “Dungeons & Dragons” in 1983.
Unfortunately, Rich struggled with substance abuse throughout his adult life. In the ’90s, he was arrested for allegedly burglarizing a pharmacy, and he spent several years in and out of rehab.
In 2002, he faced another legal issue when he was arrested for driving under the influence. However, Rich maintained his innocence and claimed to have been sober for ten years during a CBS News interview.
Despite his challenges, Rich dedicated his remaining adult life to recovery.
