Exciting news! Emma Coronel, the wife of the infamous Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, is set to be released in Los Angeles on Wednesday. This comes after her arrest in 2021 on drug trafficking charges, according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons.
The 34-year-old, who was born in the U.S., was sentenced to three years in prison in 2021 after pleading guilty to three counts related to her involvement with the Sinaloa drug cartel. These charges included conspiracy to launder money, distribute illegal drugs, and engage in financial dealings.
But that’s not all. She also confessed to acting as a courier between Mr. Guzman and other members of the organization while he was incarcerated in Mexico’s Altiplano prison after his 2014 arrest.

Fortunately for Ms. Coronel, her sentencing judge recognized her quick acceptance of responsibility and her agreement to forfeit nearly $1.5 million of her criminal proceeds to the U.S. government. As a result, her three-year sentence was later reduced.
The U.S. Bureau of Prisons has announced that Ms. Coronel will be released on Wednesday from a low-security confinement institution in Los Angeles. However, no further details have been provided at this time.
Meanwhile, her husband, Mr. Guzman, is currently serving a life sentence in the U.S. after being extradited in 2017. This followed his daring escapes from Mexican maximum-security prisons, including one where he dug a mile-long tunnel from his cell.
As of now, Ms. Coronel’s lawyers have not responded to requests for comment. It remains unclear whether she will face charges for drug trafficking or other crimes within Mexico.
In addition to her prison sentence, Ms. Coronel has been placed under two years of supervised release.
It’s worth noting that Ms. Coronel and Mr. Guzman have two daughters together. They first met when she was a young beauty queen and tied the knot in 2007 when she was just 18 years old.
