Chicago experienced a violent Easter weekend, with 33 people being shot, according to police.

Seven of those shot were killed, Chicago police announced, per ABC 7 Chicago. The majority of the shootings occurred between 8 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday.

One of the shootings was a mass shooting, killing one woman, 19, and injuring four others. The suspect opened fire at the group, who were in a business, at approximately 1 a.m. Police said the circumstances of the shooting weren’t known, and no one is in custody.

The level of the violence drew national attention, with Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) blaming it on the Democratic leadership of the city.

“33 shot. 7 killed. Easter weekend,” Jordan wrote on X. “Democrat-run Chicago.”

The violence comes as Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson is moving to end the police’s use of the ShotSpotter gunshot detection system, claiming it is racist and contributes to overpolicing in black areas.

Though Johnson declared the removal of the system a “done deal,” some in Chicago’s city council are moving to preserve it in some districts, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
