Trump supports 18 co-defendants after arrest in interview.
Former President Donald Trump Shows Sympathy for Co-Defendants
During an interview after surrendering and being released at the Fulton County Jail, former President Donald Trump expressed sympathy for his co-defendants. He is currently facing 13 charges related to efforts to overturn the state’s 2020 presidential election result.
Trump spoke with Newsmax host Greg Kelly while onboard the Trump Organization’s Boeing 757, en route to New Jersey from Atlanta.
Trump Criticizes Justice Department
“It’s a very sad experience, and it’s a very sad day for our country,” Trump said. “This is a weaponized Justice Department.” He continued, “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Trump also praised his former lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, stating that he believes Giuliani can handle his indictment. However, Trump claimed that he is unsure if he has ever met some of his co-defendants named in the indictment. Giuliani turned himself in to Fulton County authorities on charges related to attempting to interfere with the 2020 Georgia election results alongside Trump.
“I don’t even know that I’ve met a lot of those people, but some I do, and their lives are destroyed by these maniacs,” Trump said. “These are animals. These are vicious animals that have destroyed the lives of these people.”
Trump’s Thoughts on the Republican Primary Debate
When asked about the first Republican primary debate, which he did not attend, Trump expressed appreciation for entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, stating that he thought Ramaswamy did a great job.
However, Trump criticized former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who had previously advised and supported him but became a strong critic during the 2020 election fraud allegations.
“He’s wasting room, he’s wasting space, and he’s wasting time,” Trump said of Christie.
Trump also took shots at Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, commenting on DeSantis’ statement about firing former chief medical adviser Anthony Fauci. Trump claimed that DeSantis “loves” Fauci.
Trump’s Call to Action for the GOP
Praising the head of the Republican National Committee, Trump emphasized the importance of preventing fake ballots during elections. He urged the GOP to rally around election time to ensure the integrity of the voting process.
“It’s wonderful whether you vote on Tuesday or whatever,” Trump said. “But the big thing is we don’t want fake ballots put in – okay? That’s the thing nobody ever talks about. We don’t want fake ballots put in, and that’s the most important thing.”
Trump’s Concern for Co-Defendants
Trump concluded by expressing his belief that his co-defendants have been unfairly dragged into the situation and that they are “high-quality people.” He called for their release from the “horrible thing” they are going through.
Authorities released Trump’s mug shot shortly after his departure from the jail. According to Fulton County Jail records, he spent approximately 20 minutes inside the facility, where he was fingerprinted.
This legal battle marks the culmination of over two years of investigation by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’s office. Trump was released on a $200,000 bond and returned home to New Jersey following his arrest in Atlanta.
Trump made his first post on X, formerly known as Twitter, after over two years of absence. He used his mugshot to link to his website and requested donations.
“What has taken place is a travesty of justice and ELECTION INTERFERENCE. The Left wants to intimidate YOU out of voting for a political outsider who puts the American people FIRST,” the campaign website reads.
Trump’s first post on his social media platform, Truth Social, occurred while he was flying back home.
