Donald Trump criticizes Jack Smith’s court date request, citing concerns about its timing with the Iowa caucuses.

Former President Trump Slams Proposal for Speedy Trial

Former President Donald Trump has strongly criticized a proposal from U.S. prosecutors to begin ⁤his trial in less ⁤than ‌five months, accusing them of⁣ trying to interfere with the upcoming Iowa Caucuses. Special counsel Jack Smith has requested that the trial ‍start on January 2, 2024, just ahead of ⁢the crucial ⁢Republican primary.

“Deranged Jack Smith ‍has just asked for a ⁣trial‍ on the Biden Indictment to take place on January 2nd., just ahead of the important Iowa Caucuses,” the‍ current GOP front-runner‌ wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, on ⁢Thursday ⁤evening.

Smith,⁤ who is determined to ensure a “speedy trial,” recently indicted Trump⁣ and ⁢arraigned him in a third ‍case this ‌year. The ⁢latest criminal case‍ also involves six⁤ unnamed co-conspirators who have ‌yet to ⁢be charged.

In his ‌proposed timeline, Smith included a date for a motions hearing, where requests to exclude⁢ specific evidence are made. He suggested ⁤that by September 25, both‌ parties should have filed their written pretrial⁢ defense motions. The hearings would then commence no‌ later than November 13, with jury selection starting on December 11. The final ⁤schedule decision rests with U.S. District ‌Judge Tanya Chutkan.

“Only an out of touch lunatic would ask for such a date, ONE DAY into the‍ New Year, and maximum Election Interference‌ with IOWA!” Trump exclaimed.

The Iowa Republican presidential caucuses, scheduled for January 15, have traditionally served as a crucial indicator of a ⁢candidate’s viability.

Trump ⁤further argued that any trial, which he believes should never take place due to his ‌First Amendment rights‌ and ‍alleged Biden corruption, should only occur after the election. He also claimed that other indictments against Biden are fake and constitute election ‌interference.

Trump, who pleaded not guilty to four criminal charges related⁢ to his⁢ attempts to overturn the⁢ 2020 election, is currently‌ under investigation on multiple other ⁤fronts. His⁢ legal team has been attempting to delay the hearing⁢ by rejecting a protective ⁢order from Smith, citing‌ concerns about potential infringement on Trump’s right to free ⁣speech.

Protective Order Hearing Scheduled

Judge Chutkan has set a hearing ⁢on the proposed protective ⁤order for Friday morning.
