Former President Donald Trump’s Legal Team Meets with Special Counsel Amid Potential Indictment
Former President Donald Trump expressed confidence in his legal team‘s recent meeting with special counsel Jack Smith’s team, despite the looming possibility of an indictment. In a statement on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump emphasized that he believes he has done nothing wrong and that an indictment would only serve to further harm the country.
Trump’s legal team is actively preparing for the potential scenario of a federal grand jury voting on charges against the former president as early as Thursday, according to sources familiar with the matter. This development comes after Trump revealed on July 18 that he had been notified of being the target of an investigation into the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot and alleged efforts to undermine the 2020 election.
The target letter cited three federal statutes related to deprivation of rights, conspiracy to defraud the country, and witness tampering. As part of Smith’s investigation into election subversion and attempts to impede the peaceful transfer of power, members of the grand jury have been hearing testimony. Reporters observed members of the grand jury entering the courthouse on Thursday.
It is worth noting that Smith has already indicted Trump in Florida for alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving office in 2021. Additionally, Trump faces an indictment in New York this year in connection with a case involving a payment of $130,000 to porn star Stormy Daniels during the final days of the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump has pleaded not guilty in both cases.
