Don Bacon’s wife received anonymous messages after he opposed Jordan speakership.
Extreme Measures Taken to Secure Support for Rep. Jim Jordan as House Speaker
As Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) strives to gather the necessary 217 votes to become House speaker, some individuals are resorting to extraordinary tactics to ensure his support within the Republican conference.
After 20 House Republicans rejected Jordan in the initial round of voting for a new speaker on Tuesday, Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), who did not vote for Jordan, revealed that his wife received numerous threatening messages from an unidentified number.
Threats and Urging for Support Flood Rep. Bacon’s Wife
Bacon’s wife reportedly received multiple texts following the vote, questioning why he wasn’t being a team player and urging her to persuade him.
“Talk to your husband, tell him to step up, be a leader, and help the Republican Party secure a speaker. There’s too much going on in the world for all this chaos within the Republican Party. You guys take five steps forward and then turn around and take 20 steps backwards. No wonder our party always ends up getting screwed over,” read one of the messages posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
The Washington Examiner reached out to Bacon’s office for confirmation.
According to another message, she was asked, “Why is your husband causing chaos by not supporting Jim Jordan? I thought he was a team player.”
When Bacon’s wife inquired about the sender’s identity, they refused to provide it. Instead, they stated, “Your husband will not hold any political office ever again. What a disappointment and failure he is.”
“These threats are wrong and should stop,” commented a spokesperson for Jordan in response to the Washington Examiner.
Bacon, along with several others, voted for former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Tuesday’s ballot. Meanwhile, some conference members supported Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA). Scalise initially triumphed over Jordan in a closed-door conference vote for the speaker nominee but withdrew from the race due to difficulties in securing enough GOP support for a House floor vote.
The Ohio Republican had intended to return to the House floor for another vote on Tuesday evening but decided to call it a night when it became evident that more opposition within the conference was emerging. Instead, the House is expected to hold another vote around 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

How can the divisive approach of resorting to threats and coercion hinder the collective efforts and compromise the functioning of the House
According to Rep. Bacon, his wife received a barrage of threatening messages and calls, urging him to support Rep. Jordan’s bid for House speaker. These messages came from an unknown source and contained disturbing and menacing language. Rep. Bacon expressed his concern for his family’s safety and stated that these tactics were completely unacceptable. It is unfortunate that the political climate has descended to such extreme measures to secure support for a candidate.
This incident is not an isolated case. Several other House Republicans have reported similar instances of intimidation and coercion aimed at influencing their vote for Rep. Jordan. While it is unclear who is behind these campaigns, it raises serious questions about the state of our political discourse and the lengths some are willing to go to achieve their objectives.
A Climate of Fear and Intimidation
The campaign for Rep. Jordan’s speakership has turned increasingly hostile, creating a climate of fear and intimidation. Some of these tactics include anonymous threats, harassing phone calls, and even the spreading of false information about the targeted representatives. Such behavior undermines the democratic process and erodes trust among elected officials.
It is important to remember that in a democracy, elected officials should be able to vote based on their conscience and the will of their constituents, without fear of reprisals. Intimidation tactics only serve to undermine this fundamental principle and prevent honest and open discussions within political parties.
Furthermore, these extreme measures present a significant barrier to unity within the Republican conference. By resorting to threats and coercion, supporters of Rep. Jordan not only disregard the diverse opinions within their own party but also alienate potential allies. This divisive approach hinders the collective efforts to achieve common goals and compromises the functioning of the House.
In response to these reported incidents, House leadership, including current Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Minority Leader Steve Scalise, have condemned the actions of those involved. They have expressed their commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all members of Congress and have called for an immediate investigation into these matters. It is essential that the culprits behind these threats and acts of intimidation are identified and held accountable for their actions.
As the campaign for the House speakership continues, it is crucial for all involved to remember the values at the core of our democracy – respect, open dialogue, and the right to differ in opinion. Extreme measures, such as those witnessed in recent days, only further polarize our political landscape and undermine the very institutions that uphold our democratic principles.
Regardless of the outcome of this race, it is imperative that we reflect on these events and work towards fostering an environment where elected officials can vote freely and without fear of retribution. The health of our democracy depends on it, as does the trust of the American people in their government and their representatives.
