DOJ considers charges for Dem Senator in corruption probe: Report
Sen. Robert Menendez Facing Potential Corruption Charges
The Department of Justice is currently considering corruption charges against Senator Bob Menendez (D., N.J.), as reported by the Wall Street Journal here.
Menendez has been under investigation for allegedly accepting a Mercedes and a luxury apartment from New Jersey’s IS EG Halal in exchange for political favors. The company had won an exclusive contract from Egypt to certify halal meat exports, which raised eyebrows due to the head of the company not being Muslim and lacking experience in halal certification. Investigators are looking into whether Menendez, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee responsible for allocating billions of dollars to Egypt, used his influence to secure the contract in return for these gifts.
Prosecutors will be meeting with Menendez’s lawyers in the coming weeks before making a final decision, according to the Journal.
This is not the first time Menendez has faced corruption allegations. In 2017, he stood trial for public corruption after being accused of providing kickbacks to a wealthy doctor friend, Salomon Melgen. It was revealed that Melgen had used his American Express credit card points to pay for a three-night stay for Menendez in a Paris hotel. In return, Menendez issued letters of support to help Melgen bring his Latin American girlfriends into the country on visas, as testified by former Senate staff. However, the trial ended in a mistrial.
