DOJ investigating allegations Black Lives Matter defrauded donors
The Department of Justice is conducting an investigation into Black Lives Matter, probing how the organization handled millions of dollars in donations amid the 2020 protests following the murder of George Floyd, according to multiple reports.
Federal investigators have issued subpoenas and executed a search warrant in their investigation into the anti-racism organization and whether or not it defrauded donors who contributed over $90 million to its cause.
The investigation into the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Inc. began under the Biden administration, according to the Associated Press. The report also said the DOJ is investigating “other Black-led organizations that helped spark a national reckoning on systemic racism.”
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California is leading the investigation. The district office is led by acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, appointed by President Donald Trump.
The Black Lives Matter foundation said it “is not a target of any federal criminal investigation” in a statement to the Associated Press.
“We remain committed to full transparency, accountability, and the responsible stewardship of resources dedicated to building a better future for Black communities,” the foundation said.
