DOJ files federal charges against Ilhan Omar suspected attacker

The Department of Justice has filed a federal criminal complaint against Anthony James Kazmierczak, the man accused of spraying Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) with apple cider vinegar at a Minneapolis town hall event.

An FBI special agent filed the complaint and accompanying affidavit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota on Wednesday. Kazmierczak is accused of forcibly assaulting, opposing, impeding, intimidating, and interfering with Omar while she performed her duties as a congresswoman.

The suspect rushed toward Omar while she stood behind the town hall podium on Tuesday night, spraying her with a substance, identified by a hazmat specialist as water and apple cider vinegar, from a syringe. Omar was callimg for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign or “face impeachment” when the suspect charged at her.

Kazmierczak allegedly yelled, “She’s not resigning. You’re splitting Minnesotans apart,” as he pointed at and sprayed Omar, according to the FBI special agent’s accompanying affidavit.

The affidavit details two statements Kazmierczak previously made about Omar, including a Facebook post and a comment he made several years ago to a “close associate” on the phone in which Kazmierczak allegedly said “somebody should kill that b*tch,” referring to Omar. The special agent also pointed to a 2021 Facebook post in which Kazmierczak shared a political cartoon of Omar asking for personal security while holding a “Defund Police” sign.

The case has been assigned to federal magistrate judge Dulce J. Foster, who recently made headlines for condemning Attorney General Pam Bondi’s decision to post on social media photos of protesters who were impeding federal law enforcement in Minneapolis.

Kazmierczak was initially booked in the Hennepin County Jail on third-degree assault charges. He has a criminal history, including a felony auto theft conviction and several DUI arrests and traffic violations.

Following the incident on Tuesday evening, after which Omar continued the town hall, she posted on social media that she “doesn’t let bullies win.”

“I’m ok. I’m a survivor so this small agitator isn’t going to intimidate me from doing my work. I don’t let bullies win,” Omar wrote on X.
