Djokovic cruises to US Open quarters with ease.
Novak Djokovic Advances to U.S. Open Quarterfinals with Convincing Victory
NEW YORK—After a thrilling five-set battle in the previous round, Novak Djokovic was determined to avoid another tense evening at the U.S. Open on Sunday. The Serbian superstar effortlessly secured his spot in the last eight of the year’s final Grand Slam with a dominant 6–2, 7–5, 6–4 victory over Borna Gojo.
Djokovic had faced a much tougher challenge on Friday, having to come back from a two-set deficit against Laslo Djere to keep his hopes alive for a fourth U.S. Open title. This victory would also allow him to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam titles.
In Sunday’s match, the 36-year-old Serb took an early lead and never looked back. Gojo had only one break chance throughout the entire match, as Djokovic controlled the game from start to finish.

Djokovic displayed exceptional control throughout the match, committing only 12 unforced errors compared to Gojo’s 40. The Croatian player, ranked 105th, struggled under constant pressure and had his serve broken five times. Djokovic sealed the victory with his 12th ace.
“I had been closely observing Gojo’s performance in the qualifications and the main draw,” said Djokovic after his 98th career match at Flushing Meadows. He currently trails only Jimmy Connors (115) and Roger Federer (103) in terms of matches played at this venue.
“It was evident that he possesses powerful shots, especially with his serve and forehand. Additionally, he moves remarkably well for a player of his stature.
“In a best-of-five sets match, I focus on managing my energy and serving with precision.
“I believe I performed well in crucial moments, and I’m pleased to have secured the victory in straight sets.”
Next up for Djokovic is Taylor Fritz, the top-ranked American and ninth seed. Fritz advanced to the quarterfinals with a convincing 7–6(2), 6–4, 6–4 win over Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker. Although Fritz has yet to drop a set in the tournament, he still carries the memory of Djokovic’s dominant 6–0, 6–4 victory over him in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Open.
“Taylor has undeniably established himself as a top-10 player in recent years,” said Djokovic, who has a perfect 7-0 record against Fritz. “He has showcased exceptional tennis, particularly on home soil during hardcourt tournaments.
“He has made significant improvements over the years, so I anticipate tougher matches from now on. I’m ready for the challenge.
“It’s going to be an exciting showdown.”
