Disney CEO Bob Iger unsure about handling of DeSantis feud, dismisses attacks as ‘absurd’.
Disney CEO Bob Iger Fires Back at Gov. Ron DeSantis
Disney CEO Bob Iger has strongly responded to Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) in their ongoing feud, dismissing the governor’s attacks as “preposterous.” In an interview with CNBC, Iger defended Disney’s actions in Florida and refuted allegations made by DeSantis and Republicans that the company was sexualizing children.
“The last thing that I want for the company is for the company to be drawn into any culture wars,” Iger told the outlet. “We are a preeminent entertainer in the world, and we’re proud of our track record there. The notion that Disney is in any way sexualizing children, quite frankly, is preposterous and inaccurate,” he added.
Iger expressed his concern over DeSantis’s conduct, suggesting that it was a form of retaliation for Disney’s stance on the Parental Rights in Education bill.
“We are concerned that he has decided to retaliate against the company for a position the company took on pending legislation in that state,” Iger said.
While acknowledging that Disney’s handling of the legislation may not have been perfect, Iger emphasized that the company had every right to express its views.
“And frankly, the company was within its right, even though I’m not sure it was handled very well, it was within its right to speak up on an issue [of the] constitutionally protected right of free speech,” he added. “To retaliate against the company in a way that would be harmful to the business was not something that we could sit back and tolerate.”
