Florida GOP chairman avoids one charge, but faces sex tape investigation
Former Florida Republican Party Chairman Cleared of Sexual Battery Allegations, Could Still Face Charges Over Alleged Sex Tape
Former Florida Republican Party Chairman Christian Ziegler has been cleared of sexual battery allegations by Florida police, but he still could face charges over an alleged sex tape.
The Sarasota Police Department announced on Friday it would be referring a probable cause affidavit for video voyeurism to the state attorney’s office as part of the investigation into Ziegler, which began in October 2023.
According to a news release from the police department, the victim was unaware and did not consent to being video recorded during the sexual act. The investigation involved multiple interviews, surveillance footage and cellphone data analysis, as well as subpoenas.
Ziegler’s lawyer Derek Byrd expressed confidence in his client’s innocence, stating, “He has been completely honest, forthright, and has been fully cooperative with law enforcement at every stage of this investigation.”
Despite being cleared of sexual battery allegations, Ziegler’s reputation and career have suffered as a result of the investigation. Prominent Florida Republicans, including Governor Ron DeSantis and Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, called for his resignation, leading to his removal as chairman of the Florida Republican Party.
Now, Ziegler awaits a decision from the State Attorney’s office regarding potential charges related to the alleged sex tape.
