DeSantis takes aim at McCarthy and ‘DC elite’ over speaker’s remarks on Trump.
Gov. Ron DeSantis Fires Back at House Speaker McCarthy, Slams Trump’s Debt Legacy
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) didn’t hold back in his response to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Monday, accusing him of being part of the “DC establishment” and criticizing both McCarthy and former President Donald Trump for contributing to the national debt during Trump’s time in office.
When asked about McCarthy’s comments predicting Trump as the GOP nominee for 2024 and suggesting that DeSantis is not on the same level as Trump, DeSantis couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
House Republicans Opposing Stopgap Spending Measure
Seizing the opportunity, the potential 2024 presidential candidate grouped McCarthy and Trump together and targeted an issue where the House speaker is facing intense pressure from his own party: government spending as a potential shutdown looms.
“Kevin McCarthy says I’m a little different from Donald Trump. I agree,” DeSantis boldly declared on X (formerly known as Twitter). “Meanwhile, McCarthy and Trump worked together to add $7 trillion — more debt than our country accumulated in its first 200 years — in just four years. It’s no wonder the DC Establishment doesn’t want me to be president — and I wear that as a badge of honor.”
The Florida governor also made sure to highlight his accomplishments in leading the Sunshine State. “In Florida, we consistently run budget surpluses, pay down our debt, and I’ve fulfilled every promise I made,” he proudly stated.
While DeSantis has been seen as the primary challenger to Trump in the Republican 2024 primary, his campaign has struggled to gain momentum. Instead of closing the gap with the former president in the polls, the distance between them has only widened.
During an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, McCarthy expressed his belief that Trump will be the GOP nominee in the upcoming election. “President Trump is even stronger today than he was in 2016 or 2020, and there’s a reason for that. People witnessed the positive impact of his policies, putting America first, strengthening our economy, and avoiding global conflicts,” McCarthy asserted.
McCarthy also emphasized that DeSantis wouldn’t have been elected without Trump’s endorsement, stating, “I served with Ron DeSantis, and he’s not on the same level as President Trump in any way, shape, or form.”
McCarthy finds himself in a challenging position as a group of staunch conservatives refuse to support a continuing resolution that would prevent a government shutdown unless their demands regarding next year’s government spending are met.
DeSantis has aligned himself closely with the far-right Republicans, focusing on the national debt and criticizing McCarthy and Trump for their role in increasing it during their time in power. This stance aligns with his campaign strategy, positioning himself as even more conservative than Trump on key issues like abortion.
With McCarthy facing pressure from within his own party and DeSantis witnessing his chances of becoming the GOP nominee slipping away, both prominent Republicans could use a victory soon, even if it means coming at the expense of the other.

How has Florida’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic differed from other states?
Nshine State during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized his efforts in prioritizing the well-being and freedom of Floridians over strict lockdown measures. DeSantis applauded his state’s thriving economy and low unemployment rate, which he attributed to his administration’s policies.
However, DeSantis did not shy away from criticizing the Trump administration’s handling of the national debt. He pointed out that the $7 trillion increase in debt under Trump’s leadership contradicted conservative principles of fiscal responsibility.
This public exchange between DeSantis and McCarthy reflects an underlying conflict within the Republican Party. As the 2022 midterm elections loom closer and potential presidential candidates position themselves for 2024, tensions are rising between those who align with Trump’s policies and those who seek a new direction for the party.
DeSantis, who has gained popularity among conservatives nationwide, is positioning himself as a fresh face within the Republican Party. By distancing himself from Trump’s debt legacy, he aims to attract both traditional conservatives and disillusioned Republicans who may be looking for alternative leadership.
The Florida governor’s remarks also highlight the broader issue of government spending, which has increasingly become a contentious topic among Republicans. As the party attempts to address the nation’s mounting debt, differing approaches and priorities will inevitably emerge.
It is worth noting that DeSantis’ criticism of both McCarthy and Trump does not necessarily sever his ties with the former president. While he emphasizes his uniqueness and independence from Trump’s administration, DeSantis has shown support for Trump’s policies in the past and maintains a strong base of supporters who admire his conservative principles.
This exchange between DeSantis and McCarthy serves as a reminder that the Republican Party is undergoing a period of introspection and recalibration. With key figures like DeSantis challenging the status quo and offering alternative visions, the party’s future trajectory will undoubtedly be influenced by these internal debates.
The next few years will prove crucial for the Republican Party as it seeks to regain control of Congress and possibly secure the White House in 2024. As the party grapples with questions of fiscal responsibility, leadership, and its relationship with the Trump legacy, the outcome will shape the future of conservative politics in America.
