AUSTIN, Texas — Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) to Make Bold Move with Texas Border Visit

2024 Republican Presidential Hopeful Takes Action

Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is set to make his first visit to the Texas border next week, and political consultants are saying this move holds more significance than just a photo-op.

The Republican presidential hopeful, eyeing the 2024 election, will be stopping in Eagle Pass, Texas, a remote town in south-central Texas that was at the center of the border crisis in 2021 and 2022. This will be DeSantis’s second trip to the border, surpassing the number of visits made by President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Positioning Himself as the Border Security Candidate

DeSantis’s visit is seen as an attempt to position himself as the better candidate for border security. He aims to deliver on promises made by former President Donald Trump, such as finishing the border wall and achieving true operational control of the border.

“He is going to show them that he means business on the border,” said Brendan Steinhauser, a Republican operative in Texas. Steinhauser highlighted DeSantis’s track record as governor, including signing a bill that requires employers to use E-verify and increasing penalties on human traffickers.

DeSantis has vowed to “shut down” the border on his first day in office if elected president, declaring a national emergency and building a border wall.

Addressing Frustrations and Seeking Solutions

Texas has spent billions on border security efforts, but the crisis remains unresolved. DeSantis’s visit aims to address the frustrations of Texans and showcase his commitment to tackling the issue.

“Texans are pretty frustrated overall by not only the lack of results from the federal government, but also the fact that the border remains open even with a Republican-controlled state,” said Luke Macias, a Republican consultant and political commentator.

DeSantis’s visit will include a speech at the Eagle Pass VFW Post, where he will outline his plans and solutions for border security.

Choosing the Right Allies

Macias suggested that Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), a House Freedom Caucus member, would be a good fit for DeSantis to be seen with during his visit. Roy has been outspoken about securing the border and has endorsed DeSantis for president.

“Having somebody like Chip Roy in his corner shows that he is supported by the people who take this issue really seriously and have spent a lot of time on the border,” Macias said.

Looking Ahead

DeSantis’s visit to the Texas border follows his recent trip to Arizona, where he announced a nationwide coalition to bolster security at the border. His actions have drawn both praise and frustration from politicians across the country.

As DeSantis continues to make bold moves and address the border crisis, all eyes will be on his visit to Eagle Pass and the solutions he proposes.
