DeSantis slams Newsom on California exodus; Newsom avoids discussion
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Slams California Governor Gavin Newsom’s Failed Policies
In a fiery debate between Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and California Governor Gavin Newsom, DeSantis didn’t hold back in criticizing Newsom’s policies that have caused a mass exodus from the state.
When pressed by Fox News host Sean Hannity about the reasons behind the exodus, Newsom failed to provide a satisfactory explanation and instead resorted to attacking DeSantis.
“California has more natural advantages than any state in the country,” DeSantis passionately stated. “You almost have to try to mess California up. And yet that’s what Gavin Newsom has done since he’s been governor. He’s the first governor to ever lose population. They actually at one point, ran out of U-Hauls in the state of California because so many people were leaving.”
DeSantis pointed out that Newsom’s strict COVID-19 measures, which included keeping kids out of school while his own children attended private school, played a significant role in motivating citizens to flee the state.
“He’s very good at spinning these tales,” DeSantis continued. “He’s good at being slick and slippery, he’ll tell a blizzard of lies to try to mask the failures. But the reality is they have failed because of his leftist ideology. And the choice for America is this: Biden, Harris, and Newsom want to adopt the California model nationwide. In Florida, we prove that conservative principles work. This country must choose freedom over failure.”
Newsom attempted to deflect by claiming he was at the debate to defend President Joe Biden, despite that not being the original reason for the debate. Both DeSantis and Hannity called out Newsom for repeatedly avoiding answering the question.
Newsom even attacked DeSantis’ potential presidential campaign, asserting that he won’t be the Republican Party’s nominee. However, DeSantis didn’t back down and highlighted that even members of Newsom’s own family have left California to relocate to Florida.

How does Florida’s pro-business environment and low taxes compare to California’s heavy regulations and high taxes?
Ve to try to mess up California. But what’s happened? High taxes, burdensome regulations, and a complete disregard for public safety and the well-being of the people. It’s no wonder that Californians are fleeing in droves.”
DeSantis went on to highlight the stark differences in policies between Florida and California. He emphasized Florida’s pro-business environment, low taxes, and emphasis on personal freedoms and individual liberties.
“While California continues to suffocate businesses with heavy regulations and punish hardworking individuals with exorbitant taxes, Florida is thriving,” DeSantis asserted. “Our state’s economy is booming, businesses are flocking here, and our residents enjoy a higher quality of life.”
He pointed out that Florida’s lack of state income tax is a major draw for individuals and businesses looking to relocate. By contrast, California boasts one of the highest state income tax rates in the country, which places a heavy burden on its residents.
DeSantis also criticized Newsom’s mishandling of the state’s housing crisis and skyrocketing homelessness rates. He highlighted Florida’s commitment to affordable housing solutions and effective homelessness prevention programs as examples of proactive governance.
“Instead of addressing these pressing issues, Governor Newsom has focused his efforts on pushing futile and divisive policies, such as the implementation of ineffective COVID-19 restrictions,” DeSantis criticized. ”While Florida has managed to keep businesses open and protect the livelihoods of our citizens, California’s heavy-handed approach has led to unnecessary economic devastation.”
The debate highlighted the fundamental ideology differences between the two governors. DeSantis champions limited government intervention and individual freedom, while Newsom favors a more interventionist approach and prioritizes collective well-being over individual liberties.
The clash encapsulated the ongoing rivalry between red and blue states, with each governor fervently defending his respective policies and condemning those of the other.
DeSantis concluded by urging Californians to consider a move to Florida, where they can experience a better quality of life and greater economic opportunities.
“I welcome Californians to come to Florida and enjoy the benefits of a state where your hard work is rewarded, your freedoms are respected, and your rights are protected,” DeSantis declared. “Together, we can create a brighter future for all.”
As the debate came to a close, it was clear that the clash between DeSantis and Newsom was not just a war of words, but a battle of ideologies and policies. Only time will tell which approach will prevail and ultimately determine the fate of their respective states.
