DeSantis slams Biden and media for ‘disastrous’ situation in Maui.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Slams Biden Administration and Media for Ignoring Tragic Fire in Maui
During a press conference on Sunday, Governor Ron DeSantis criticized the Biden administration and the mainstream media for their lack of coverage on the devastating fire that destroyed a historic town in Maui, Hawaii. DeSantis made these remarks while discussing the recovery efforts in Florida following Hurricane Idalia.
Uncovering the Truth
When a reporter inquired about trust in the federal government’s ability to provide assistance, DeSantis responded passionately, “I think that Maui is a total catastrophe, what happened there. And I don’t think we have all the answers to that. I think we should have all the answers to that. It’s interesting how incurious our corporate media is about what happened in Maui. I mean, I don’t see them interviewing parents who can’t find their kids and people we know, there’s a lot of people missing. So that was a total disaster, really, really heartbreaking to hear some of the stories, even though they’re not being publicized.”
The governor emphasized the stark contrast between the situation in Maui and the hurricane in Florida, attributing Florida’s preparedness to his administration’s proactive measures.
Florida’s Preparedness
“Florida, especially under my administration, extensively prepares for these types of events ahead of time,” DeSantis explained. ”The federal government’s role is just turning on programs that Congress has enacted over many, many years. It’s basically serving as a checkbook to get people reimbursed for debris cleanup and to provide individual assistance. In that sense, I anticipate a smooth process. However, most of the nuts and bolts are handled by our local communities and the state of Florida. Disaster response is really a bottom-up approach.”
DeSantis highlighted the crucial role played by local governments in warning residents about potential storm surges, stating, “The state manages and assists, but the bread and butter lies with the local communities. The checkbook from the feds is great, and we’ll utilize all available resources to help Floridians. However, we’re not relying solely on the federal government for day-to-day heavy lifting.”
“As Floridians, as people in the counties and municipalities, and of course at the state level, we will take charge,” DeSantis concluded.
