DeSantis focuses on Florida hurricane response, not presidential campaign.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Puts State’s Response to Hurricane Idalia Above Campaign
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has made it clear that his priority is managing the state’s response to Hurricane Idalia, even if it means staying off the campaign trail. DeSantis, who recently returned to Tallahassee from Iowa, is focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of Florida residents as the massive storm approaches the Big Bend area of the state’s west coast.
Commitment to Florida
During a press conference, a reporter asked Governor DeSantis how long he plans to stay in Florida and off the campaign trail. In response, DeSantis emphasized that this situation is not new to him. He recalled his experience during Hurricane Ian, when he had to pause his governor campaign and cancel various scheduled events across the country.
DeSantis stated, “You do what you need to do, so that’s what we’re doing; it’s going to be no different than what we did during Hurricane Ian. I’m hoping that this storm is not as catastrophic as Hurricane Ian was, but we’re going to do what we need to do because it’s just something that’s important.”
He concluded by highlighting that this commitment to managing crises is consistent with his past actions, demonstrating his dedication to the well-being of Florida and its residents.
Prioritizing the State’s Response
This is not the first time Governor DeSantis has put the state’s response above his campaign. During his 2022 re-election bid, he paused campaigning for approximately three weeks to manage the state’s response to Hurricane Ian. His actions during that time received praise, including from President Joe Biden, who commended DeSantis for his remarkable response to the hurricane.
