DeSantis avoids taking stance on six-week federal abortion ban.
Gov. Ron DeSantis Defends Florida’s Abortion Ban, Hints at National Action
During an engaging interview with Tucker Carlson at the Family Leadership Summit in Iowa, Gov. Ron DeSantis passionately defended Florida’s controversial six-week abortion ban. However, when pressed about implementing a similar ban at the federal level, DeSantis skillfully dodged the question, leaving room for speculation.
A Vision for Pro-Life Legislation
When asked about his intentions as president regarding abortion, DeSantis expressed his desire to sign pro-life legislation and foster a culture of life in the country. He acknowledged that progress may take time in certain parts of the nation but assured the audience that he would use his position as president to support governors like Kim Reynolds who champion the cause of life.
“As president, I will be somebody who will use the bully pulpit to support governors like Kim Reynolds when she’s got a bill, other states as they advance the cause of life,” DeSantis passionately stated.
Doing What’s Right, Despite Opposition
DeSantis proudly defended his decision to sign Florida’s six-week ban, even in the face of opposition from donors and political allies. He emphasized that he entered office to do what he believes is right, regardless of the potential consequences.
“It’s been written about how I lost a lot of really big supporters. Some of them just aren’t pro-life. Some of them think it’s a political liability,” DeSantis revealed.
Although the ban is currently blocked by the courts pending litigation, DeSantis highlighted that Florida already has a 15-week abortion ban in place, showcasing his commitment to protecting the unborn.
Praising Gov. Kim Reynolds
During the interview, DeSantis took a moment to praise Gov. Kim Reynolds of Iowa, who had just signed a similar six-week abortion ban earlier that day. He commended her for her courage and dedication to the pro-life cause, despite recent criticism from former President Donald Trump.
“I’m very proud to say Kim Reynolds is here, and she signed a great heartbeat bill today. We were able to do that in Florida. We had a lot of opposition to that. I’m proud to have been a pro-life governor, and I will be a pro-life president,” DeSantis declared.
As the conversation concluded, it became clear that Gov. Ron DeSantis is a staunch advocate for pro-life legislation and intends to use his platform to support and advance the cause of life.
