Denmark bans civilian drone use ahead of EU summit
The Danish government has issued a temporary ban on civilian drone flights from September 29 to October 3, coinciding with the upcoming European Union Summit in Copenhagen.This decision follows recent unidentified drone incursions that led to the closure of multiple airports in Denmark. Although danish officials have not publicly named the responsible party, these incidents occurred amid similar airspace violations by Russian drones over other Eastern European countries. The ban aims to simplify security measures and reduce confusion between potentially opposed drones and legal civilian drones during the summit. Authorities have heightened alert levels, and violations of the ban may result in fines or imprisonment for up to two years. EU leaders are expected to discuss enhancing Europe’s defense capabilities in response to these security threats, with plans to strengthen readiness and cooperation by 2030.

Danish authorities announced a temporary ban on civilian drones to coincide with this week’s European Union Summit following last week’s unidentified drone incursions that shut down multiple airports in the country.
Those unidentified incursions occurred after several other Eastern European countries identified Russian incursions into their airspace. Danish officials have not publicly shared who they believe is responsible, while Moscow has denied involvement.
“We cannot accept that foreign drones create uncertainty and disruption in society as we have experienced recently,” Minister of Transport Thomas Danielsen said. “At the same time, Denmark will host EU leaders next week, where we must have extra focus on safety. Therefore, from Monday to Friday, we will close Danish airspace to all civilian drone flights. In this way, we remove the risk that hostile drones can be confused with legal drones and vice versa.”
The ban began on Monday, Sept. 29, and will last until Friday, Oct. 3. It is designed to ease the burden on law enforcement in identifying drones when European leaders meet in Copenhagen on Wednesday and Thursday.
“The police are on significantly increased alert, and our authorities must use their forces where necessary to look after the Danes and our guests. The purpose of the ban on civilian drone flights is, among other things, to simplify security work for the police, so that the police do not have to use forces on civilian drones without security and police relevance,” Minister of Justice Peter Hummelgaard said.
Violators can face a fine or imprisonment for up to two years.

In September alone, three Russian fighter jets entered Estonian airspace, Romania had to scramble two F-16 fighter jets to intercept a Russian drone that briefly entered its airspace, and Poland tracked several Russian drones that entered its airspace.
This week, the leaders will discuss how to strengthen Europe’s defense in light of the recent airspace violations. The EU has said it will ramp up its readiness by 2030, which includes strengthening defensive capabilities, increasing funding and development of the industrial base, and joint procurement opportunities.
