Democrats oppose Jim Jordan as potential Speaker: ‘Extreme extremist’
Democrats Slam Rep. Jim Jordan’s Potential Speakership
After Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) was nominated for the speakership by the House Republican Conference, Democrats wasted no time in criticizing his potential election to the post.
The swift denunciation of Jordan’s bid for House speaker is further evidence of the House Democrats’ united front against the fractured House GOP.
“Chairman of the Chaos Caucus”
“House Republicans have selected as their nominee to be the speaker of the people’s House the chairman of the chaos caucus,” said Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) after Jordan’s nomination. He was referring to Jordan’s membership in the House Freedom Caucus, a hard-line group of Republican lawmakers who have become a sore spot for leadership. Jordan was once chairman of the caucus.
Jeffries went on to describe Jordan as “a defender in a dangerous way of dysfunction, and an extremist extraordinaire.”
Other Democrats, including Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA) and Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA), echoed similar sentiments about Jordan.
Insurrectionist Against Democracy
“Every Republican who cast their vote for him is siding with an insurrectionist against our democracy,” Clark claimed.
Lieu expressed concerns that Jordan would “absolutely do everything he can to not certify a Biden victory,” referencing Jordan’s previous vote against certifying the 2020 election results.
An Extreme MAGA Republican Insurrectionist
“Jim Jordan is an extreme MAGA Republican insurrectionist who is currently defying a lawful Congressional subpoena,” Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “He is the House GOP’s nominee for Speaker. A Jordan speakership would be incredibly harmful for our country.”
Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) also criticized Jordan, highlighting his stance on abortion and his refusal to testify about his role in the January 6 insurrection.
As Democrats stand united against Jordan, they are rallying behind Jeffries as their nominee for speaker, with 212 votes in support. They only need five GOP defectors to secure the speakership.
Meanwhile, some centrist Republican lawmakers are open to bipartisan discussions for a speaker, as the GOP conference struggles to find a consensus.
It remains uncertain whether Jordan will garner the necessary 217 votes on the House floor to become speaker. With 81 colleagues voting against him in the conference ballot, he faces an uphill battle.
Following the nomination, the House adjourned, and lawmakers returned home for the weekend.
What concerns do Democrats have regarding Jim Jordan’s handling of the investigation into sexual abuse allegations against Richard Strauss?
Democrats due to their conservative stances and obstructionist tactics.
Jordan’s potential speakership has been met with disdain from Democrats who see him as a divisive figure who would only further polarize an already contentious Congress. They argue that Jordan’s hard-line conservative views and his role in the House Freedom Caucus would hinder any chance of bipartisan cooperation and compromise.
Additionally, Democrats have criticized Jordan’s handling of the investigation into sexual abuse allegations against former Ohio State University doctor Richard Strauss. Jordan, who was an assistant wrestling coach at Ohio State during Strauss’ tenure, has been accused of turning a blind eye to the abuse. While Jordan denies any knowledge of the abuse and has not been charged with any wrongdoing, Democrats argue that his association with the scandal raises serious doubts about his judgement and suitability for the speakership.
The Democrats’ disapproval of Jordan becomes even more significant considering the current political climate. With the country facing numerous challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, economic recovery, racial injustice, and climate change, Democrats believe that a leader with a more inclusive and pragmatic approach is needed. They fear that under Jordan’s leadership, the House would prioritize partisan fights over the needs of the American people.
Furthermore, Democrats point to the ongoing division within the House Republican Conference as further evidence that Jordan is not fit for the speakership. The fact that Jordan’s nomination was not unanimous shows that even within his own party, there are doubts about his ability to lead effectively. Democrats argue that a speaker should be able to unify their own party before attempting to lead the entire House of Representatives.
It is clear that Democrats are strongly opposed to the idea of Jim Jordan becoming the next House speaker. They see him as a symbol of the extreme and divisive politics that they believe have hindered progress in Congress. Democrats emphasize the need for a leader who can bring both parties together to address the pressing issues facing the country and work towards practical solutions. Jordan’s potential speakership represents a threat to their vision of a more cooperative and productive Congress, and they will continue to voice their concerns in the hope of swaying public opinion and avoiding his election to the position.
