Democrats eagerly anticipating one of their own as Speaker.
Democrats Excited at the Prospect of Their Own Speaker
Just two days after Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz joined forces with fellow Republicans and House Democrats to remove Kevin McCarthy from the speakership, the leftists at The New Republic are feeling a surge of excitement. They may have bitten off more than they can chew.
“Speaker Hakeem Jeffries: three words that have many Democrats salivating on television and in the halls of the Capitol as House Republicans remain in total disarray,” wrote Capitol Hill reporter Pablo Manríquez before finally conceding — 19 paragraphs into a 19-paragraph piece — that the “most likely” scenario is that Jeffries can’t garner the votes to ascend to the role.
Next week, when the House reconvenes to hear from candidates for the position and hold multiple ballots, the outcome remains uncertain. Never before in American history has a speaker been removed by fellow House members, let alone had a motion filed against them.
Gaetz, frustrated by McCarthy’s collaboration with Democrats, worked with all House Democrats to oust him.
So, what happens now? That’s the question on everyone’s mind. The current frontrunners for the position are Reps. Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan, but it’s unclear if either of them has enough votes to win on the first ballot.
Democrat Rep. Gerry Connolly believes Jeffries has a slim chance, even in a Republican-controlled House. He said, “I’d give it a slim chance today, but ask me again in four weeks if we haven’t elected a speaker.”
With a November 17 deadline to avoid a government shutdown, the pressure is on to get a speaker in place and move forward with House business. If Republicans can’t accomplish this on their own, it’s possible that a few Republicans may support a Democratic candidate to break the impasse.
According to The New Republic, all 22 House Democrats asked about their voting plans said they would support Jeffries. Assuming all 212 Democrats vote the same way, Jeffries would only need five Republicans to secure the position.
While this scenario seems unlikely, given the possibility of additional motions to vacate, it’s important to remember that we are in uncharted territory. The future of the House remains uncertain.
As Manríquez wisely wrote, “The way things are in the House these days, you can’t rule out anything.”

What challenges might Hakeem Jeffries face in securing enough votes from both Democrats and Republicans to win the speaker position

One potential candidate that has gained attention is Representative Hakeem Jeffries from New York. Jeffries is a rising star within the Democratic Party, known for his charisma, intelligence, and ability to bridge the gap between progressive and moderate factions. The possibility of him becoming the next speaker has generated excitement among Democrats who see him as a unifying figure who can lead the party forward.
However, as Manríquez points out in his article, the path to Jeffries’ speakership is not without obstacles. While he may be popular among Democrats, he still needs to secure enough votes from both Democrats and Republicans to win the position. In a highly polarized political climate, garnering bipartisan support for a Democratic Speaker may prove challenging.
Furthermore, Jeffries will face fierce competition from other potential candidates within the party. Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Nancy Pelosi have also been mentioned as potential contenders. Both of these individuals have strong support within the Democratic base and would bring their own unique perspectives and leadership styles to the role.
Ultimately, the decision will come down to the House members who cast their ballots next week. Their votes will determine the future direction of the Democratic Party and the leadership of the House. The outcome of this historic event will have far-reaching implications and could shape the political landscape for years to come.
Regardless of who ultimately becomes the next Democratic Speaker, the events of the past week have showcased the Democrats’ ability to take decisive action and challenge the status quo. This bold move by Gaetz and his fellow Democrats has shown that they are not afraid to disrupt the traditional power dynamics in pursuit of their goals.
While the road ahead may be uncertain, one thing is clear – the Democrats are energized and ready to make their mark. Whether it is Hakeem Jeffries or another candidate, the Democrats are excited at the prospect of having their own speaker and using this position to advance their agenda and bring about meaningful change.
As the House reconvenes and the votes are cast, all eyes will be on the outcome. The potential for history to be made and for a new chapter in Democratic leadership to begin is palpable. The Democrats have seized the moment, and now it remains to be seen if they can make their vision a reality.
