Democrats ‘look stupid’ trying to shut down the government after Kirk’s death: Byron York
Washington Examiner Chief Political Correspondent Byron York said Democrats “look stupid” trying to shut down the government following the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
York said he thinks Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will shut down the government, despite the recent assassination of Kirk, who was shot and killed last week while speaking at an event in Utah.
“It does look stupid but I think they are going to continue to do it in part because government really does have deadlines, these are actual arguments, and congress has to do something whether the atmosphere is tragic or not,” York said on The Hugh Hewitt Show Wednesday.
Republicans need the support of at least seven Senate Democrats to break the filibuster and keep the government open past the Sept. 30 deadline.
In March, Schumer voted to keep the government open and convinced enough Democrats to go along with him. Now, he is saying that “the situation is much different.”
York said he thinks Democrats will continue pushing back on the spending bill despite recent events.
“The everyday fight that constitutes so much of government and, that’s what this is, do look particularly petty in comparison to a huge life and death event that we just witnessed,” York said.
He also said Schumer has been “really nervous about alienating the left side of his party.”
Since Kirk’s assassination, there has been speculation about the suspect, Tyler Robinson’s political beliefs, but authorities have said Robinson subscribed to leftist ideology.
York said the left is in “complete denial” of Robinson’s actual motive.
“They are just twisting themselves into pretzels to try and deny what is right in front of their face by the way in Tyler Robinson’s own words, so again beliefs can be even more stubborn than facts,” he said.
CONSERVATIVES FEUD OVER WHAT CHARLIE KIRK WOULD HAVE WANTED
York agreed with Hewitt that Democrats haven’t been “reading the room” since Kirk’s assassination.
“We’ve been having this debate for a while on the nature of political violence, and the one thing we have seen has been just complete denial on the left that there was political violence on the left because they believe with all their heart that MAGA is a violent extremist authoritarian movement, and that January 6 typifies MAGA,” York said.
“That is what it’s about and they talked away the Butler assassination attempt on President Trump.”
