The Washington Examiner piece by Byron York argues that the 2028 Democratic presidential primary will force candidates to confront Biden-era immigration and border policies.York points to the Old Dominion University shooting by Mohamed Bailor Jalloh-who admitted attempting to assist ISIS-as an example of how immigration and national security intersect in current politics. He contends that sanctuary cities and Biden’s border policy have allowed illegal immigrants to cross and remain in the U.S. without thorough vetting, a critique he says will fuel Republican efforts to tighten immigration rules. York notes that the 2020 Democratic primary centered on who would be softest on immigration, and suggests this will again be a major issue as candidates reckon with the Biden record in 2028. He also cites recent terrorist-linked attacks in Texas and Michigan as evidence of the broader costs he associates with U.S. immigration policy. The article mentions possible 2028 Democratic contenders and includes related recommended stories and multimedia.
2028 Democratic primary will be a reckoning on Biden and immigration: Byron York
Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York said that Democratic lawmakers eyeing the White House will need to “reckon” with the last administration’s handling of immigration and border security.
Authorities identified Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Sierra Leone who spent six years in the Virginia National Guard, as the gunman in the Old Dominion University shooting in Virginia. Jalloh admitted to attempting to assist ISIS, a designated terrorist group, in 2017, and prosecutors said he thought committing terrorist attacks was “100% the right thing.”
York emphasized the details learned after “terrible” events, including the perpetrator, and the “lots of effects” that sanctuary cities have nationwide. He added that the border policy under the Biden administration was different from others by having illegal immigrants “all over the world” crossing the border, with “large numbers” of these people being able to stay in the U.S. “unvetted.”
“Now if you remember the 2020 Democratic primary race, it was essentially a bidding contest over who would be softest on immigration, and Joe Biden won that contest, and I do think that that’s going to be a real issue to watch in the 2028 Democratic primaries to see how candidates will reckon with what happened under Biden and vow not to make it happen again,” York said on Fox News’s The Ingraham Angle Monday.
York also said the U.S. has “essentially imported some of the world’s worst conflicts” to play out in the city’s streets. He cited the recent attacks in Texas and Michigan over the last month, saying it is part of a “huge failure of U.S. immigration policy.”
TERRORIST ATTACKS FUEL GOP PUSH TO CRACK DOWN ON LEGAL IMMIGRATION
