Democrat wins special election for New York state senate in district Trump won by double digits
Democrat Sam Sutton won a special election in New York for state Senate in a district President Donald Trump won by a vast margin in the 2024 election.
Sutton defeated Republican Nachman Caller, an attorney who previously ran for state Assembly. He beat Caller 67.6% to 32.4%.
Sutton’s win retains the seat for the Democrats. The special election was called after former state Sen. Simcha Felder resigned from his position last month to serve on the New York City Council.
The Brooklyn district includes a heavily Orthodox Jewish area, a community to which Sutton has close ties as a co-leader of the Sephardic Community Federation. In the last election, Trump won 77% of the vote within the district’s boundaries.

Sutton said his “victory represents a unified voice calling for positive change across our diverse district.”
“I am eager to get to work ensuring our constituencies’ pressing issues are solved,” he said. “From tackling antisemitism to expanding economic development to improving public safety, I’m looking forward to working with my future colleagues in the Senate to advocate for the people of South Brooklyn, and all New Yorkers.”
