Biden’s rival opposes decision to remove Trump from Colorado ballot
A Democrat Criticizes Court Ruling Removing Trump from Colorado Ballot
A Democrat running against President Joe Biden in 2024 has spoken out against the recent court ruling that disqualified former President Donald Trump from the ballot in Colorado.
In a passionate post on Wednesday, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) criticized the decision made by the Colorado Supreme Court to remove Trump from the state’s presidential primary. The court based its ruling on the belief that Trump had engaged in an insurrection on January 6, 2021, citing Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.
Do I believe Trump is guilty of inspiring an insurrection and doing nothing to stop it? I was there. Absolutely.
Do I believe it’s wrong to ban him from the ballot in Colorado without a conviction? Absolutely.
Do I believe the SCOTUS must opine immediately? Absolutely.

Phillips, who is currently trailing behind Biden in the polls, expressed his disagreement with the ruling shortly after Biden himself commented on the matter. While Biden acknowledged that Trump had supported an insurrection, he did not go as far as Phillips in calling for the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene.
Trump’s campaign plans to appeal the decision in Colorado, and other GOP candidates and officials have also criticized the ruling.

Meanwhile, other presidential candidates like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Cenk Uygur have also voiced their opinions on the ruling. Kennedy expressed concern about the impact on democracy, emphasizing the importance of fair elections. Uygur, on the other hand, supported the 14th Amendment case against Trump but criticized the Democratic Party’s handling of the election process.
As the legal battle continues, the controversy surrounding Trump’s eligibility to run in 2024 shows no signs of abating.
Should the Supreme Court of the United States have the final say on determining the eligibility of a presidential candidate?
Should have the final say on this matter? Absolutely.
As a Democrat, I believe strongly in the principles of democracy and the rule of law. While I disagree with many of the policies and actions of Donald Trump, I also believe in the importance of due process and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. Banning Trump from the ballot in Colorado without a conviction is, in my view, a violation of these principles.
Furthermore, I believe that it is not the role of a state court to determine the eligibility of a presidential candidate. That responsibility lies with the Supreme Court of the United States, the highest judicial authority in the land. If there are concerns about the constitutionality or eligibility of a candidate, it should be the Supreme Court that makes the final decision.
The Colorado Supreme Court’s decision sets a dangerous precedent. It opens the door for other states to similarly disqualify candidates based on their own interpretations of the law. This undermines the uniformity and fairness of our electoral process and creates the potential for partisan manipulation.
Instead of using the courts to silence political opponents, we should trust the American people to make their own decisions at the ballot box. The voters of Colorado should have the opportunity to decide whether or not they want to support Donald Trump. It is not the role of the courts to interfere in this democratic process.
By removing Trump from the ballot, the Colorado Supreme Court is undermining the democratic rights of the people and setting a dangerous precedent. As a Democrat, I urge the court to reconsider its ruling and uphold the principles of democracy and due process. Let the voters decide.
In conclusion, I disagree with the court ruling that removed Donald Trump from the ballot in Colorado. While I have my own criticisms of Trump and his actions, it is crucial that we uphold the principles of democracy and due process. Banning a candidate without a conviction and without the final say of the Supreme Court sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the integrity of our electoral process. Let the people decide, as they should in a true democracy.
