Defense lawyers for the man convicted of Iowa college student Mollie Tibbett’s murder have pushed for a new trial. Attorneys for Cristhian Bahena Rivera introduced new evidence on Tuesday, which they said could clear him of murder.

An inmate at the Iowa Department of Corrections testified another inmate had admitted to framing Rivera and killing Tibbett’s himself along with an accomplice as part of a sex trafficking ring.

“He said, you know the guy that’s being charged for it right now? I said no I don’t,” he explained. “He’s like we set him set him up. It was a sex trafficking case gone wrong.”

The defense team also tried to tie Tibbett’s murder to the disappearance of Xavior Harrelson in the same county.
