Tourists Suspected in Discovery of Dead Whale in City Waters
Tragic Discovery of a Whale Carcass Sparks Outpouring of Grief in Hong Kong
The recent discovery of a whale carcass in the waters of Hong Kong has ignited a wave of sorrow and outrage on social media. Many individuals are pointing fingers at sightseers, holding them responsible for the mammal’s untimely demise.
Local residents initially believed that the deceased creature was the same whale that had been attracting groups of sightseers since its first sighting in mid-July. However, Compass Chan, the scientific officer of Ocean Park Conservation Foundation Hong Kong, has not confirmed whether it is indeed the same whale. He did mention that a preliminary examination of the carcass revealed a new wound on its back, in addition to two older wounds.
“It’s a pity,” Chan expressed during a media briefing. ”If it truly perished, it presents an opportunity for everyone to seriously contemplate how we should coexist with other species in nature.”
The exact cause of death will be determined through a necropsy, according to Chan.
Following the discovery of the carcass in the waters of Sai Kung, a district renowned for its hiking trails, beaches, and islands, many residents expressed their discontent with the whale-watching activities that had taken place over the past two weeks. They accused the sightseers of contributing to the whale’s demise due to their ignorance. Some even shared a Canto-pop song titled “Whale Eater” on their social media platforms.
The Ocean Park Conservation Foundation had previously stated that a crowd of people had been observed approaching the animal, believed to be a Bryde’s whale measuring approximately 23 feet in length. The foundation cautioned that human activities can cause stress and have life-threatening consequences for marine creatures, noting that the whale already had propeller wounds.
The government announced that the necropsy process may take several days, and the results will serve as a reference for future handling of whale incidents in Hong Kong.
