DC Restaurant Chain Shuts Down Over Surge in Violent Crime, Costs
Washington, D.C. Restaurant Chain Forced to Close Due to Surge in Violent Crime and Operating Costs
A popular restaurant chain in Washington, D.C. made a heartbreaking announcement on Thursday – they will be closing their doors for good. Brine, known for its delicious seafood, cited the alarming increase in violent crime and soaring operating costs as the main reasons behind their decision.
In an emotional Instagram post, the owners expressed their deep regret, stating, “This decision was not an easy one. Unfortunately, the challenges of the restaurant industry since the pandemic, the current economic climate, and the spike in violent crime have made it increasingly difficult to operate and impossible for us to survive. We have explored all options, but regrettably, we have no choice but to close our doors.”
The last day of service for both Brine locations, one on H Street and the other in DuPont Circle, will be Saturday, November 11.
While the closure of the DuPont location was primarily due to financial reasons, according to Fox 5, Aaron McGovern, the operator of the H Street restaurant, emphasized the impact of crime on their decision. In an interview, McGovern revealed, “We’ve both been burglarized numerous times, both of my restaurants. Numerous times. So has everyone on the block, numerous times. We started to see violence. Not just ‘Oh, there’s a gunshot a mile away. We could hear the bullets.’ It’s—the restaurant I’m looking at right now had four shootings there four weeks ago.”
Tragically, the neighboring restaurant, Cru, located across H Street from Brine, was the site of a shooting that resulted in one fatality and three injuries on September 23.
McGovern also called on local leaders to address the detrimental effects of rising crime rates on businesses. He urged, “I think our leadership in government, local government should really take a look at the businesses. The safety of the citizens. The well-being of its taxpaying base and see that it’s important because people will leave. They stop going out. They’ll move out of the city, and you need to protect your citizens.”
As of Thursday, violent crime in D.C. has increased by a staggering 40 percent year-to-date since 2022, while property crime has risen by 25 percent in the same period.
It’s not just restaurants that have been affected by the crime wave in the nation’s capital. Even members of Congress have fallen victim. Just last month, three armed assailants carjacked Representative Henry Cuellar (D., Texas). Fortunately, the police were able to recover his car, phone, iPad, and even his sushi dinner.
What role did operating costs, including ingredients, rent, utilities, and labor, play in Brine’s decision to close?
Constraints, the decision to close the H Street location was also influenced by the increase in violent crime in the area. According to data from the Metropolitan Police Department, there has been a significant rise in violent crimes, including homicides, robberies, and assaults, in the H Street corridor in recent months.
The owners of Brine expressed their concern for the safety of their staff and patrons, stating, “We cannot ignore the safety and well-being of our employees and customers. The current environment in this neighborhood is simply not conducive to running a safe and successful business. We have made every effort to work with local law enforcement and community leaders to address the issue, but the situation continues to escalate.”
Operating costs have also played a major role in the restaurant chain’s decision to close. The cost of ingredients, rent, utilities, and labor have all been steadily increasing, putting a strain on the business’s finances. Additionally, the ongoing labor shortage in the hospitality industry has made it difficult for Brine to maintain a sufficient staff to meet the demand.
The closure of Brine is not an isolated incident in Washington, D.C. or the restaurant industry as a whole. Many businesses have struggled to stay afloat amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the surge in crime rates in certain areas. This has led to a wave of closures and layoffs, further impacting the local economy.
The closure of Brine is not only a loss for the owners and employees but also for the community. The restaurant was a beloved gathering place for locals and visitors alike, known for its high-quality seafood and welcoming atmosphere. Its closure reflects the broader struggles faced by businesses in Washington, D.C. and serves as a reminder of the urgent need for solutions to address the increase in crime rates and the financial challenges faced by the restaurant industry.
Local residents and community leaders are calling for action to address the root causes of the surge in crime. Enhanced law enforcement presence, improved community relations, and targeted economic revitalization efforts are just some of the proposed solutions. However, finding long-term and sustainable solutions will require a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including local government, law enforcement, business owners, and community members.
In the meantime, the closure of Brine serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of crime and operating costs on local businesses. It symbolizes the struggles faced by not just one restaurant, but by many others in the city. The loss of Brine is a blow to the culinary scene in Washington, D.C. and a wake-up call for the community to come together and find solutions to these pressing issues.
As Washington, D.C. grapples with this crisis, the closure of Brine will serve as a lasting testament to the challenges faced by small businesses in the current economic and social climate. It is a call to action for all stakeholders to work together to create a safe and welcoming environment for businesses to thrive, ensuring that the vibrancy and diversity of the city’s restaurant scene can continue to flourish.
Only then can we hope to see the day when restaurants like Brine can once again open their doors and serve their delicious seafood to a grateful community.
