Cuomo’s chances doomed unless Sliwa drops out: Eric Trump
Eric Trump warned that former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has little chance of winning the New York City mayoral race against Democrat Zohran Mamdani if Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa remains in the race. Speaking on Fox News, Trump said Sliwa’s continued candidacy would split the anti-Mamdani vote, effectively ensuring Mamdani’s victory. Despite pressure from Republicans and wealthy backers urging him to drop out and support Cuomo, sliwa has refused to exit the race. Recent polls show Mamdani leading, Cuomo in second, and sliwa in third place; however, if Sliwa were to withdraw, Cuomo could narrow the gap significantly. The race highlights a key battle over whether Republicans and moderates can unite to prevent a socialist candidate from winning city Hall.
Eric Trump warns Cuomo’s chances doomed unless Sliwa drops out of New York race
Eric Trump warned that former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has no shot at defeating Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani in the New York City mayoral race if Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa remains in the contest.
Appearing Tuesday on Fox News’s America Reports, the president’s son said Sliwa’s refusal to exit the race would divide the anti-Mamdani vote and ensure a left-wing victory in November.
“Can Cuomo pull off victory if Sliwa is still in the race?” host Sandra Smith asked Trump.
“No, of course not,” Trump replied. “That’s why the New York Post, that’s why one of your own companies [referring to the fact that News Corp, which owns the New York Post, and Fox Corporation are both owned by the Murdoch family] is strongly encouraging him to get out of the race.”
Tuesday’s New York Post cover featured the headline, “Just Walk Away, Beret! Even allies tell Sliwa to drop mayor bid — don’t let Zohran win.”
“I love Republicans, but the problem is right now the guy’s polling at like 9%,” Trump said. “I’m not saying I’m the biggest Cuomo fan — I’m against a lot of the things that Cuomo’s done — but at least he’s not trying to nationalize grocery stores, at least he’s not trying to raise taxes further in New York.”
Trump, who has deep business and personal ties to New York, lamented the city’s current direction and accused Mamdani of pushing radical policies that threaten its economic core.
“It breaks my heart. There’s no one in the world that loves New York City more than the Trump family, more than my father [President Donald Trump], more than me. I run buildings there every single day. It’s what I do. And again, all everybody is asking for is keep our city clean, keep our city safe, have reasonable tax policy, don’t be crazy, and New York will take care of itself,” Trump said.
The warning came as tensions escalated within New York Republican circles. On Tuesday, Sliwa again refused to bow to pressure from his party and billionaire backers, including John Catsimatidis, who publicly urged him to drop out and back Cuomo.
“Let’s be very clear: I am not dropping out — under no circumstance,” Sliwa said at a press conference. “I’ve already been offered money to drop out. I said no.”
A new AARP and Gotham Polling survey shows Mamdani leading with 43.2%, Cuomo trailing at 28.9%, and Sliwa in third with 19.4%. The same poll suggests that if Sliwa dropped out, Cuomo would close the gap to within 4 points — making the race a statistical toss-up.
The pressure on Sliwa will likely intensify ahead of Wednesday night’s final mayoral debate.
With only two weeks left before Election Day, the race has become a test of whether Republicans and moderates can unite to block a self-described socialist from taking City Hall — or whether Mamdani will receive a decisive victory.
