Cuban officials announced an islandwide blackout amid the country’s ongoing energy crisis, describing a total disconnection of the National Electric Power System and saying restoration efforts are underway. The outage is tied too severe fuel shortages and comes as U.S. policy, including a blockade and tariffs on oil shipments to Cuba, exacerbates the crisis. President Miguel Díaz-Canel said that for three months no fuel ships had arrived, and that Cubans are living under very adverse conditions. The blackout follows a previous outage in western Cuba, underscoring persistent power shortages across the island. The report situates the crisis within broader geopolitical tensions and U.S.-Cuba policy developments.

Cuban officials report islandwide blackout amid US oil blockade

Officials in Cuba announced an islandwide blackout on Monday amid the country’s energy crisis.

“A total disconnection of the National Electric Power System has occurred,” Cuban officials wrote on X, saying restoration efforts were underway.

The blackout comes as the Trump administration turned its Latin American focus to Cuba following the capture of former Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro.

Earlier this year, President Donald Trump imposed a U.S. blockade and sweeping tariffs against foreign governments supplying Cuba with oil, resulting in an energy crisis for the island country.
