Could Barack Obama Join the NBA Ownership Ranks and the Next Owner of the Phoenix Suns?
Could Barack Obama join the NBA ownership ranks?
That’s a rumor that has been percolating for a couple of weeks, but the former president issued a kind of non-denial denial.
The chatter began in late October, when Bill Simmons and Charles Barkley were talking on Simmons’ podcast about if Barkley would want to join a prospective Phoenix Suns ownership group after current owner, Robert Sarver, announced in September that he was selling the team following an NBA investigation into his conduct.
Barkley was of the opinion that he’d rather have $20 million in cash than a $20 million stake in the Suns, and Simmons interjected — dropping the rumor about Obama.
“The days of somebody being able to put in a little bit of money and being able to run the team — those days are over,” Simmons said. “The one guy who might pull it off, and I might be breaking some news here, but I heard Obama’s involved in one of the groups, and that’s the one guy that they’d make him the actual face, and the money guys would be so happy to have him at the front that they’d just be like, ‘Cool you can [do that.]’”

This news excited Barkley.
“Timeout! If President Obama called me, hell yeah I’m buying in!” Barkley exclaimed.
While on the campaign trail in Arizona last week, Obama addressed these rumors but implied they were news to him.
“It is good to be back in Arizona,” Obama said. “I wanted to come out here, not only because it’s sunny and warm, but also, you know, there have been these rumors about me and the Phoenix Suns.”
The crowd applauded.
“I didn’t know I was in the market, and by the way neither did Michelle, but I will say this, the Suns are looking pretty good,” Obama added. “I gotta admit that. I think they have a few more wins than my Bulls right now.”
Reports have indicated that the Suns could sell for up to $4 billion.
Amid the ownership turmoil, the Suns are currently 7-2 and atop the Western Conference.
