Virginia voters’ confidence in both President Biden and the nation continues to decline
A New Survey Reveals Virginians’ Disapproval of President Biden and the Country’s Direction
A day after President Joe Biden traveled to Virginia for a reelection campaign event, where he took a verbal jab at popular Governor Glenn Youngkin, a new survey has found that voters in Virginia are ready to throw it back in his face.
The latest poll from the Wason Center for Civic Leadership at Christopher Newport University reveals that Virginians, who generally approve of their governor and the direction of the commonwealth, do not feel the same way about President Biden or the country’s trajectory.
The survey, which included 1,000 Virginia voters, shows that 59% of respondents disapprove of Biden, while only 36% approve. This marks a 2-point drop in the president’s approval rating compared to a year ago.
Furthermore, the research director, Rebecca Bromley-Trujillo, highlights that only 20% of respondents believe the country is heading in the right direction, while a significant 71% believe it is heading in the wrong direction.
On the other hand, Virginians continue to approve of Governor Youngkin, with a 50% approval rating compared to 39% disapproval. Additionally, 43% of respondents believe the commonwealth is heading in the right direction, while 37% think otherwise.
Challenges for President Biden’s Reelection
This is the second poll released this week that shows Governor Youngkin performing well and President Biden struggling. This is a concerning position for Biden as he heads into the 2024 reelection and relies on battleground victories in states like Virginia.
In a survey conducted by Virginia Commonwealth University, 37% of voters expressed disapproval of Biden’s job performance, while 54% gave Youngkin a thumbs-up.
Both polls suggest that President Biden may face difficulties in repeating his 2020 victory over former President Donald Trump in Virginia. While Biden won by a 10-point margin, in a head-to-head battle, Trump is trailing by just 3 points, according to the VCU survey.
“It’s really looking rough for Biden,” says CNU’s Bromley-Trujillo.
Youngkin’s Popularity and Biden’s Joke
Despite Governor Youngkin’s popularity, President Biden started his speech in Manassas by acknowledging the presence of former Governor Terry McAuliffe, whom he campaigned for in 2021. However, McAuliffe lost to Youngkin, who was a political newcomer.
Attorney General Jason Miyares tweeted, “So Joe Biden is an election denier?” in response to Biden’s joke.
When asked why Virginians support the Republican governor, even after his party lost control of the General Assembly in the previous election, Bromley-Trujillo explained that Youngkin is likable and maintains support across partisan lines. She believes his moderate and friendly demeanor contributes to his popularity.
How has Governor Glenn Youngkin’s victory in the Virginia gubernatorial election contributed to the disapproval ratings of President Biden
Is heading in the right direction, while a staggering 74% believe the country is on the wrong track. These numbers indicate a significant lack of confidence in President Biden and his policies among Virginians.
One of the key factors that has contributed to this disapproval is the handling of the economy. The survey reveals that 62% of respondents are concerned about the rising inflation rates, while 56% are worried about the increasing national debt. This suggests that Virginians are feeling the impact of Biden’s economic policies and are not satisfied with the results.
Another area of concern for Virginians is the administration’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the availability of vaccines, 47% of respondents feel that the Biden administration has not done enough to control the spread of the virus. This sentiment is echoed by the fact that 54% of respondents are concerned about the rising COVID-19 cases in their communities.
Furthermore, the survey sheds light on the dissatisfaction with President Biden’s handling of foreign policy. Only 37% of respondents approve of his approach to international relations, while 54% disapprove. This reflects concerns over the handling of the withdrawal from Afghanistan and the ongoing challenges faced on the global stage.
Governor Glenn Youngkin’s recent victory in the Virginia gubernatorial election also plays a role in these disapproval ratings. Youngkin, a Republican, was able to tap into the discontentment with Biden’s policies and gain support from Virginians who feel that their concerns have not been adequately addressed. This shift in political power suggests a growing dissatisfaction with President Biden and a desire for change among Virginians.
Overall, the survey reveals that Virginians are expressing their disapproval of President Biden and the direction of the country. It highlights concerns over the economy, COVID-19 response, and foreign policy. These findings serve as a wake-up call for the Biden administration, indicating the need for course correction and a closer examination of the concerns and priorities of Virginians. As the 2022 midterm elections approach, this survey underscores the importance of addressing these issues and reconnecting with disillusioned voters. Failure to do so could have significant consequences for President Biden and his party.
