Alan Moore, comic writer, donates DC movie royalties to Black Lives Matter.
Comic Creator Alan Moore Pledges Movie Royalties to Black Lives Matter
Comic creator Alan Moore has made a generous commitment. He has pledged to donate all future movie royalties he receives to Black Lives Matter.
Best known for his iconic works such as “Watchmen,” “V for Vendetta,” and “The Ballad of Halo Jones,” Moore rarely makes public appearances. However, he recently shared some of his thoughts in an interview with The Telegraph.
In the past, Moore has been hesitant to associate his name with big-screen adaptations of his work. He used to share his movie royalties with the film’s writers and creative team, but he has now decided to change that.
“I no longer wish to share it with them. I don’t believe they have upheld the original principles I assumed they had,” Moore explained. “So I have requested that DC Comics send all future TV series or film earnings to Black Lives Matter.”
The acclaimed creator of “V for Vendetta” also revealed that he has become somewhat of a recluse due to his overwhelming popularity.
“People would look at me as if they were having a religious experience rather than a normal conversation. So I have retreated into what I initially thought a writer’s life would be like, where I sit at home and write books,” Moore shared.
Moore has been openly critical of the modern comic industry, particularly the concept of adult-oriented comics.
“Now they are called ‘graphic novels,’ which sounds sophisticated and allows for higher prices. What attracted me to comics is no longer present. The innocent and imaginative superhero characters from the past are being recycled as if they were meant for adult audiences,” Moore expressed.
Continuing his critique, Moore stated, “I did not intend for my experiments with comics to become the industry norm. When I created works like Watchmen, I was not promoting the idea that dark and psychopathic characters are cool, but that seems to be the message the industry embraced for the next two decades.”
Reflecting on his career, Moore admitted that he regrets entering the comic industry.
Currently working on fantasy books, Moore also criticizes the formulaic nature of the genre, similar to comics.
“Fantasy these days seems to be limited to a Tolkien or George R.R. Martin world of warriors, dragons, and, for some reason, dwarves. The fantasy books that inspire me, like Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast trilogy, actually explore the real world and the changing nature of British society,” Moore shared.
“Fantasy has no boundaries, so it’s disappointing to constantly hear the same tune on the piano. Let’s have extraordinary visions that have never been seen before—and let’s move away from the overused portrayal of people with restricted height,” Moore concluded.
