Comer and Jordan address Hunter Biden’s request for special treatment in brief response
Top Republican lawmakers slam Hunter Biden’s attorney’s request for special treatment
House Oversight Chairman James Comer of Kentucky and House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio have strongly criticized Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, for seeking preferential treatment in a recent letter. Lowell had informed lawmakers that Hunter Biden would be willing to testify in a public forum but not in a private deposition. Hunter Biden and President Joe Biden’s brother James were subpoenaed on November 8.
“If, as you claim, your efforts are important and involve issues that Americans should know about, then let the light shine on these proceedings,” Lowell wrote.
However, Comer and Jordan rejected Lowell’s request to deviate from committee protocol and hold a sit-down deposition on December 13.
“Mr. Biden’s attempt to avoid sitting for a deposition pursuant to the terms of subpoenas — by offering instead to testify at a public hearing — amounts to a demand that he receive special treatment from the Committees,” the lawmakers wrote. “Mr. Biden will not succeed in attempting to dictate to the Committees how they conduct their investigation.”
Comer expressed openness to a public hearing at a later date while emphasizing the expectation of full cooperation with the subpoena for a deposition.
🚨STATEMENT ON ABBE LOWELL LETTER🚨
“Hunter Biden is trying to play by his own rules instead of following the rules required of everyone else. That won’t stand with House Republicans.
“Our lawfully issued subpoena to Hunter Biden requires him to appear for a deposition on…”

House Republicans initiated an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden in September after revelations of family influence peddling, including credible allegations of criminal bribery. In addition to Hunter and James Biden’s testimony, investigators are seeking testimony from about a dozen other family members and associates involved in the family’s business ventures.
Despite President Biden’s repeated denials of engaging in business discussions with his son during the 2020 election, reports indicate that he met with family clients over 200 times. The inquiry has expanded to include interviews with individuals associated with Hunter Biden’s art career.

How might a public hearing allow Hunter Biden to control the narrative and avoid potentially damaging revelations
Im to appear for a deposition, and we expect him to comply. We will not allow Mr. Biden to dictate how our investigation should be conducted.”
In the letter, Comer and Jordan reiterated their concerns regarding the potential conflict of interest arising from Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine and China while his father, Joe Biden, was vice president.
“Hunter Biden’s alleged involvement in questionable business transactions and his role in foreign companies raise serious questions that need to be answered,” the lawmakers stated. “It is essential that he appear for a private deposition so that we can obtain the necessary information to fully understand the extent of his involvement and any potential wrongdoing.”
The subpoena of Hunter Biden and James Biden is part of an ongoing investigation by the House Oversight and Judiciary committees into potential ethics breaches and conflicts of interest within the Biden family.
Lowell’s request for Hunter Biden to testify in a public forum is seen by some as an attempt to control the narrative and avoid potentially damaging revelations that might arise in a private deposition. Critics argue that a public hearing may allow Hunter Biden to evade difficult questions or spin the story in his favor.
The refusal of Hunter Biden to comply with the deposition subpoena could result in legal consequences, including a contempt of Congress charge. The lawmakers emphasized that they were prepared to take further action if necessary to enforce the subpoenas and ensure a thorough investigation.
The battle between Hunter Biden’s attorney and top Republican lawmakers is likely to intensify as the investigation into the Biden family continues. The outcome of this disagreement will have significant implications for the perception of fairness and transparency in the investigation process.
As the debate unfolds, the American public will be watching closely to see how both sides handle these contentious issues and whether justice will be served in the pursuit of truth.
