Comer and Norton propose bill to revamp RFK Stadium.
Legislation Introduced to Revitalize RFK Stadium Site in Washington, D.C.
Rep. James Comer (R-KY) and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) have joined forces to introduce the D.C. Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act. This legislation aims to breathe new life into the site where RFK Stadium currently stands in Washington, D.C.
The bill proposes transferring control of the land from the secretary of the interior to the administrator of the General Services Administration. With the General Services Administration in charge, the legislation requires them to enter a lease with the Washington, D.C., government, granting them the freedom to redevelop the land as they see fit. Possibilities include a new stadium, commercial or residential developments, or recreational facilities.
Revitalizing the RFK Stadium Site for the Benefit of the Community
“I’m proud to introduce the bipartisan D.C. Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act, which is long overdue legislation that will provide D.C. leaders the opportunity to revitalize the RFK stadium site. This legislation is set to pave the way for local officials to create meaningful new jobs, add millions in city revenue, and transform the Anacostia River waterfront into a lively destination for all,” stated Comer.
Norton, the District of Columbia’s sole representation in Congress as a nonvoting delegate, expressed her support for the bill, emphasizing the potential for productive use of the site in southeast D.C. She highlighted the opportunity to generate tax revenue for the city through redevelopment.
Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington, D.C., also expressed her excitement about the legislation during a press conference. She sees gaining control of the site as a victory for the city, the federal government, and the future of the community.
When asked about the new owners of the NFL’s Washington Commanders, Bowser made it clear that she believes the team should only be playing in D.C. She has already had discussions with the new owners and is determined to secure a new stadium for the team.
Building Bridges After Earlier Friction
The introduction of this legislation comes after months of tension between the city and the federal government over crime laws. However, the proposed bill appears to be an olive branch, signaling a desire for collaboration and progress.
“The House Oversight Committee remains committed to working with Washington, D.C. officials to ensure a capital that is prosperous for residents and visitors for generations to come. After discussing city initiatives with D.C. Mayor Bowser and other local stakeholders, it has become clear that addressing the deteriorating conditions at the RFK Memorial stadium site is a top economic priority for the city,” stated Comer.
With the potential for a new stadium and various redevelopment opportunities, the D.C. Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act holds promise for the future of the RFK Stadium site and the surrounding community.
