CNN hails Biden’s Maui speech, likening historic fire to small kitchen fire.
CNN Reporter Praises President Biden’s Empathy in the Face of Tragedy
CNN climate reporter Bill Weir was captivated by President Joe Biden’s recent remarks in Maui. During his visit, Biden compared the devastating wildfires that have ravaged the U.S. to a small kitchen fire he experienced many years ago.
The Maui wildfires, which occurred earlier this month, have resulted in over 100 fatalities and left more than 1,000 people still missing. Additionally, nearly 3,000 structures have been destroyed, according to state and local officials.
A Presidential Visit to the Heart of the Tragedy
Weir shared that President Biden and Dr. Biden spent several hours in Lahaina, meeting with first responders and victims at the War Memorial shelter in central Maui.
While acknowledging that Biden initially remained silent on the issue, Weir commended the President for finally addressing the situation and serving as the “empathizer-in-chief.”

Controversial Remarks and Personal Connections
Despite facing criticism for his initial response to the tragedy, Biden’s visit to the island on Monday sparked further controversy due to his remarks.
Biden drew backlash when he compared the devastating fire to a small kitchen fire that occurred at his home in the early 2000s. At the time, the Associated Press described the incident as “small” and “contained to the kitchen.” The fire was quickly controlled by the Delaware fire department.
Reflecting on his own experience, Biden shared, “I don’t want to compare difficulties, but we have a little sense, Jill and I, what it’s like to lose a home.” He recounted the incident when lightning struck his home, causing a fire that endangered his family and belongings.

Expressing gratitude for the firefighters who risked their lives to save his family, Biden emphasized the challenges of being displaced from their home for almost a year. He acknowledged that losing a home completely to a fire must be an unimaginable tragedy.
