CNN lauds Biden’s ’empathetic nature’ despite insensitive Maui reaction.
CNN White House correspondent Jeremy Diamond is excited about President Joe Biden’s visit to fire-ravaged Maui. He sees it as a perfect opportunity for the “consoler-in-chief” to showcase his renowned empathy.
Diamond’s remarks were made just before Biden’s arrival in Maui, almost two weeks after the devastating fires swept through the historic village of Lahaina. However, Diamond conveniently overlooked the fact that the president had initially offered “no comment” on the disaster and had spent vacation days in Lake Tahoe before visiting the devastated island.

CNN’s Jeremy Diamond downplays Biden’s heartless silence on the Maui wildfires last week and promotes his late arrival.
He boasts that “most importantly” the trip to the island “will be an opportunity for the President to display that signature empathy” the media claims he has. pic.twitter.com/DSxTjDqurS— Nicholas Fondacaro (@NickFondacaro) August 21, 2023
Diamond quoted Biden as saying, “I will do everything in my power to help Maui recover and rebuild from this tragedy. And throughout our efforts, we are focused on respecting sacred lands, cultures, and traditions.”
He acknowledged that Biden might face criticism for the federal government’s slow response so far. Some Maui residents complained about the delayed reaction, and Republicans criticized Biden for not addressing the situation for several days.
Diamond then emphasized that the most important aspect of Biden’s visit to Maui is the opportunity for him to demonstrate his signature empathy. Although it may have been absent for a few days, empathy has been a defining characteristic of Biden’s political career and presidency. This is a chance for him to showcase it once again.
However, what Diamond brushed off as Biden’s “signature empathy” being absent for a few days, others saw as tone-deaf at best. After days of silence on the devastating fires and rising death toll, a reporter caught up with Biden at his Rehoboth Beach vacation home and asked if he had anything to say about the situation. Biden simply replied, “No. No comment.”
When Biden finally arrived on the island on Monday, the situation worsened as he repeatedly tried to express “empathy” by sharing exaggerated personal stories. In one instance, he claimed to understand the pain of losing a home to a fire, referring to a minor kitchen fire caused by a lightning strike that was quickly controlled within 20 minutes. He even mentioned that it almost destroyed his ’67 Corvette and killed his cat.
