CNN’s parent company plans to re-launch a streaming service after the failure of CNN+ within a month.
Warner Bros. Discovery to Launch CNN Max Streaming Service
Warner Bros. Discovery is making a second attempt at a news streaming platform, following the failure of CNN+ last year. The new service, called ”CNN Max,” is set to launch on September 27. It will feature popular shows like “Amanpour,” “Anderson Cooper 360,” “The Lead with Jake Tapper,” and ”The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer,” as well as new shows like “CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta, Rahel Solomon, Amara Walker and Fredricka Whitfield” and “CNN Newsroom with Jim Sciutto.” Unlike its predecessor, CNN Max will be included in the MAX streaming package at no extra cost to subscribers.
According to JB Perrette, CEO and president of Global Streaming and Games at Warner Bros. Discovery, the addition of world-leading news to the MAX streaming package is a significant enhancement for subscribers. The decision to launch CNN Max aligns with the company’s broader direct-to-consumer strategy, providing consumers with simplicity and an all-in service.
CNN+ Shutdown and Leadership Changes
In April 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery shut down CNN+ after less than a month due to low viewership. Despite signing former Fox News anchor Chris Wallace and giving him a show on the platform, CNN+ failed to attract a substantial audience, with fewer than 10,000 daily viewers. Chris Licht, the then-CEO, stated that the decision to shut down CNN+ was in line with the company’s strategy to offer a better streaming experience and more value to consumers.
Following the shutdown of CNN+ and ongoing struggles with audience engagement, Chris Licht stepped down as CEO in June. His leadership was marked by controversy, including the cancellation of CNN+ and the departure of familiar faces like Brian Stelter and Don Lemon. The network’s tumultuous year reached a boiling point with a controversial town hall featuring former President Donald Trump in May.
