Clyburn slams ‘MAGA-leaning Supreme Court’ for killing black voter support for Biden

Rep. Jim Clyburn Blames Supreme Court for⁣ Biden’s Support Drop‍ Among Black Voters

According to Rep. ‌Jim Clyburn (D-SC), President Joe Biden’s support among ‌black ‍voters has suffered due to the Supreme Court’s rulings on⁣ the Voting Rights Act. Clyburn, a prominent black Democrat who played⁢ a crucial role in saving Biden’s 2020 campaign, ‍criticized the “MAGA-leaning Supreme Court” ⁤for contributing to these ⁤poll numbers during an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

Unfinished Business and⁤ Disappointment

“Absolutely ⁤not. Let me‌ tell you what you are seeing there. People are focusing on some of the unfinished business. Sure, I’m disappointed, as any other black person, that we have not been able to renew the Voting Rights Act, ‍but we are going to‌ show why,” Clyburn expressed.

“Why haven’t we done it? Because this⁢ conservative, MAGA-leaning Supreme Court has desecrated the Voting Rights Act, and we have not been able to get the Republicans in the Congress to renew it. And so⁢ a lot‌ of black people are disappointed that‌ that has not gotten done,” he added.

Other Factors at‌ Play

Clyburn also highlighted other policies, such ⁣as the expiration ⁣of the increased child tax credit, as a‍ reason for the current decline in poll numbers. He emphasized that Biden would secure “at least⁤ 92%” of the black vote in the 2024 election.

“A lot of black people are disappointed that we were not able to renew that part ⁣of the Rescue Plan and the child⁣ tax credit. That is very important in the African American community. So ⁤when you ask the polling information, that’s what they give you. ‘No. I’m dissatisfied that we have not ‌done these things,'” Clyburn explained.

“But when‌ it comes to the general election and when we lay out what we’ve ‍done and what we propose⁣ to do, and compare that to what the Republicans have done and what they are proposing to do, you’ll‍ see Joe Biden get at least 92% of the African American vote in the general‌ election. That I am confident of,” ‌he concluded.

How has the decline in support among black voters affected the Biden administration, and what ⁢is their response to ⁤these concerns

⁣ Ocratic lawmaker ⁢and a close ally of Biden, made these remarks during⁣ an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Tuesday.

Clyburn argued that the Supreme Court’s decision in 2013 to strike down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act has had ⁤a detrimental impact on the ability of black‌ voters to exercise their right to vote. The provision in question required states with a history of ‍voter ⁤suppression to obtain⁢ federal approval before making any changes to their voting laws.

Since⁢ the court’s ruling, several states, particularly those with a history of discriminatory voting ⁢practices, have implemented stricter voter ID laws, purged voter rolls,⁤ and shortened early voting periods. These measures disproportionately affect black and ⁤minority voters, making it more difficult ⁣for them‌ to participate in the democratic process.

Clyburn specifically ‍pointed ⁢to the voter⁤ ID laws as one of the main contributors to Biden’s declining support among black voters. He noted that these laws place an undue burden on individuals who may not possess the necessary identification documents, such as ‍driver’s licenses⁢ or passports, which can disproportionately affect low-income individuals and communities of color.

Furthermore, Clyburn ⁣highlighted the fact that many of these voting restrictions disproportionately target urban areas‌ that have higher populations of black voters. This, he argued, has had a chilling effect on turnout and contributed to the decline in support for Biden among black voters.

The congressman also criticized the Supreme Court’s recent decision to uphold ‌a controversial voting ⁣law in Arizona, which has been widely criticized as discriminatory towards minority voters. Clyburn argued ⁤that the court’s conservative majority has consistently ruled against protections for minority voters, undermining the progress made by the Voting Rights Act.

Clyburn’s comments come at a time ⁣when ⁢the Biden administration is facing challenges in maintaining its support among black‌ voters. Despite⁤ campaign promises to prioritize issues affecting marginalized communities, recent polls ⁣have shown a decline in⁢ approval ratings among black voters.

In response to Clyburn’s remarks, White House Press ⁢Secretary Jen Psaki acknowledged ‌the concerns raised by ‍the⁤ congressman and reiterated the administration’s‌ commitment to ‌protecting voting rights. She highlighted the work being ⁤done by President⁣ Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to push for the passage of federal voting rights⁣ legislation that would counteract the restrictive state laws.

Psaki also emphasized the importance of grassroots organizing and community mobilization to address the challenges faced by black voters. She‍ acknowledged that there is still work to be done to ensure equal access to the ballot box for all Americans and expressed ⁢the administration’s determination to fight for these rights.

The ‌Supreme⁣ Court’s rulings on the⁤ Voting Rights Act⁤ and ⁤the subsequent implementation of restrictive voting laws have undoubtedly had a detrimental impact on the ability of black voters to ⁢fully⁢ participate ‍in the democratic process. ⁢While Rep. Jim Clyburn’s assertions may be met ⁣with⁣ disagreement‍ or skepticism by some, it is crucial to engage in a constructive dialogue ‍to address⁤ these concerns and⁢ safeguard the ⁢right to vote for all Americans.
