Christie surpasses DeSantis in NH 2024 primary: Poll
Support for Ron DeSantis Falls to Single Digits in New Hampshire Polling
For the first time, support for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has dropped to single digits in New Hampshire polling, signaling a struggle to revive his 2024 campaign. According to a recent survey by Emerson College, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has surpassed DeSantis in a crowded primary field that is still dominated by former President Donald Trump. Christie secured second place with 9% support among New Hampshire Republicans, while DeSantis slipped to third with 8%.
Up for Debate: Trump, DeSantis, and Other 2024 GOP Hopefuls’ Stance on Second Amendment
This poll highlights the growing opportunity for the second-place position in the 2024 race. While DeSantis remains the only Republican, aside from Trump, to reach double digits in national polling, he has experienced a significant decline since launching his campaign in May.
This decline has opened the door for his GOP competitors to position themselves as the next best alternative to Trump. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy recently surpassed DeSantis in national polling for the first time, while Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) has surged to third place in Iowa.
One thing remains constant: Trump’s strong hold on the primary electorate. According to the RealClearPolitics average, the former president maintains a 40-point advantage over the rest of the GOP field, a lead consistent with Emerson’s findings in New Hampshire polling.
DeSantis, once considered Trump’s main rival after his decisive reelection victory in the Florida gubernatorial race last year, has faced a series of missteps and campaign shake-ups in recent weeks.
DeSantis’s campaign strategy sharply contrasts with that of Christie, a former ally of Trump who turned against him after the January 6th riot. While both embrace the combative persona of the former president, Christie is running as a staunch Trump critic, while DeSantis mirrors Trump in both substance and style.
Christie has focused his candidacy on winning over New Hampshire, the second primary state in the 2024 cycle. He launched his campaign with a town hall at Saint Anselm College. However, he may face challenges in winning over a GOP electorate that still largely supports Trump, as the former president fell just short of majority support in the Emerson poll.
According to Emerson, Scott currently holds fourth place in New Hampshire, but is within the margin of error of both Christie and DeSantis, with 6% support.
Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley and Governor Doug Burgum (R-ND) registered at 4% in the poll conducted from August 9th to 11th, while Ramaswamy received 3% support.
