China warns Biden: “Our resolve remains unshaken.”
China Accuses US of Turning Taiwan into an “Ammunition Depot”
China has accused the United States of transforming Taiwan into an “ammunition depot” following the White House’s announcement of a $345 million military aid package for Taipei. In response, the self-ruled island revealed that it had tracked six Chinese navy ships in waters near its shores.
China’s Opposition to Military Aid
The Taiwan Affairs Office of China issued a statement on Saturday expressing its opposition to the military aid provided to Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory.
“No matter how much of the ordinary people’s taxpayer money the… Taiwanese separatist forces spend, no matter how many U.S. weapons, it will not shake our resolve to solve the Taiwan problem. Or shake our firm will to realize the reunification of our motherland,”
said Chen Binhua, a representative for the Taiwan Affairs Office.
The statement further claimed that the actions of the United States and Taiwan were turning Taiwan into a “powder keg and ammunition depot,” thereby exacerbating the threat of war in the Taiwan Strait.
Chinese Military Maneuvers and Taiwan’s Response
In recent years, China’s People’s Liberation Army has escalated its military maneuvers aimed at Taiwan, frequently sending fighter jets and warships to circle the island. On Sunday, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense reported tracking six Chinese navy ships near its territory.
The ruling administration in Taiwan, led by the Democratic Progressive Party, has increased its weapons purchases from the United States as part of a deterrence strategy against a potential Chinese invasion.
Background and Aid Package Details
China and Taiwan have been separate entities since the civil war in 1949, with Taiwan never being governed by China’s ruling Communist Party.
The latest military aid package, unlike previous purchases, is part of a presidential authority approved by the U.S. Congress last year. It allows Taiwan to access weapons from existing U.S. military stockpiles without waiting for production and sales. The aid includes man-portable air defense systems, intelligence and surveillance capabilities, firearms, and missiles.
