By Josh Ye and Urvi⁢ Manoj Dugar

At least three Chinese tech firms, including Baidu,⁣ Baichuan Intelligent Technology,‍ and Zhipu ‌AI, are set to⁣ launch their artificial intelligence (AI) products after receiving government approval. This⁣ move⁢ comes as China ramps ⁤up its efforts to⁢ accelerate ‌AI deployment.

Baidu, China’s ‌leading online search provider,⁣ announced that its AI‌ chatbot Ernie⁣ Bot, similar to ChatGPT, will be fully accessible to the general public. Additionally, ‌two ‌AI startups, Baichuan Intelligent Technology and Zhipu AI,‌ will officially ⁤launch their chatbots ⁣on Thursday. All three companies have‌ obtained government approval for their products.

Baidu’s shares saw a ‌4.5% increase in early trading in Hong Kong.

Unlike in Western countries where AI ‍products can be launched without regulatory approval, China requires companies to undergo ⁣security assessments and obtain clearance before ⁤releasing mass-market AI products.

Chinese authorities‌ have recently intensified efforts to support AI ‍development as it becomes a key focus‌ of competition with the U.S.

According to Chinese media ⁢reports, a‌ total of 11 firms, including ByteDance (the⁣ maker of TikTok) and⁢ SenseTime ⁢Group, have⁤ received government approvals.‍ However, neither company has responded to requests‌ for comment. SenseTime’s shares rose by about 4% in Hong Kong after the market opened.

The regulatory approvals were widely anticipated following the implementation of interim rules by China⁢ on ‌August 5th, aimed at regulating generative AI products⁢ for the public.

Prior to these rules, companies were only allowed to conduct small-scale public tests of AI products. However, with the new regulations, companies have expanded their ‍AI product tests ⁢by incorporating more features⁣ and engaging in increased marketing efforts.
