Chicago Democrat proposes solution to high homicide rate: Encourages gangs to limit shootings to nighttime.
A Bold Proposal to Address Chicago’s Homicide Crisis
In a city plagued by an alarming homicide rate, one Democrat politician in Chicago has put forward a daring suggestion: ask gang members to limit their shootings to the evening hours. It may sound unconventional, but the idea is gaining traction.
Maria Hadden, a Chicago alderwoman, recently sent an email promoting a proposal from a group called Native Sons. This proposal urges gang members to restrict their shooting activities to a specific time frame: between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. It’s a small step towards curbing the violence that has plagued the city for far too long.
“We have to start somewhere,” says Tatiana Atkins, co-founder of Native Sons. “Our goal is to approach our city’s gun violence problem strategically and not all at once. Things didn’t become this way overnight and change won’t happen overnight.”
Under this proposed ordinance, gang members would be encouraged to disassociate from the culture of violence. They would be asked to stop glorifying shooters, abandon the use of dangerous “switches” that turn handguns into automatic weapons, and refrain from wearing ski masks that perpetuate a sense of fear and danger.
The hope is that by creating a clear distinction between the day and night, potential victims will be more cautious and proactive in protecting themselves and their loved ones. Tatiana Atkins emphasizes the urgency of the situation, stating, “At the end of the day, gun violence is claiming the lives of people from all walks of life, from innocent children to fathers and even elderly individuals. This must stop.”
Surprisingly, the response to this proposal has been somewhat positive. Atkins reveals, “I myself have reached out to active gang members in regards to this ordinance and have had more positive feedback than negative. Some have even shared the ordinance on their social media platforms. It’s a small step, but it’s a step in the right direction.”
A City in Crisis
The urgency to address Chicago’s homicide crisis cannot be overstated. According to a February 2023 report, the city had the highest number of homicides among major cities in the United States in 2022. With a staggering total of 697 homicides, Chicago surpassed cities like Philadelphia, New York City, Houston, and Los Angeles. Shockingly, this marked the 11th consecutive year that Chicago led the nation in homicides.
It’s clear that bold and innovative solutions are needed to combat this ongoing tragedy. While the proposal to restrict shootings to specific hours may seem unconventional, it represents a step towards change. By rallying behind this ordinance, media, government officials, and community residents can send a powerful message: enough is enough. Together, we can make a difference and create a safer Chicago for all.
