Elon Musk Exposes Meta’s Deception in Letter
In a strongly worded letter, Twitter threatens to sue Meta for intellectual property theft
In a letter dated July 5, Elon Musk’s attorney, Alex Spiro, has warned Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg that Twitter is prepared to take legal action against Meta for its alleged “systematic, willful and unlawful misappropriation” of intellectual property. The letter claims that numerous former Twitter employees, now working for Meta, have illegally used Twitter documents and electronic devices to create Threads, a copycat app recently launched by Meta.
The letter also highlights a clause in Twitter’s terms of service that prohibits the crawling or scraping of Twitter’s followers or following data, suggesting that Twitter had suspicions about Meta’s activities. The letter demands that Meta immediately cease using any Twitter trade secrets or confidential information, with the implication that a civil lawsuit will follow if Meta fails to comply.
Elon Musk summarized Twitter’s stance in a tweet, stating, “Competition is fine, cheating is not.”

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey joined the conversation, borrowing a quote from venture capitalist Peter Thiel that was originally aimed at Twitter. Dorsey tweeted, “We wanted flying cars, instead we got 7 Twitter clones,” in response to a tweet comparing Twitter to similar copycat apps.

Musk responded with the “face with tears of joy” emoji, indicating laughter, to a tweet suggesting that Threads’ coding was simply copied and pasted from existing material.

In response to a tweet criticizing the Threads logo, Musk replied, “Metaphorically too.” This comparison is fitting if Twitter’s allegations are true, as tapeworms are known parasites.

Meta has not yet responded to the letter, but a company spokesperson, Andy Stone, denied the allegations on social media. Stone stated that no former Twitter employees are part of the Threads engineering team.
